Introductions & Greetings

Welcome to CK5, stop in and say hello, this is a great place to make your first post and tell us a little about yourself/truck. :D

Hello. I finally registered for this site. I've been on here quite a few times but this is my first time sharing anything. I recently found a 1983 Blazer out in Maryland on ebay. I bought it, sight unseen and had it shipped to me in St. Louis.

After 5 posts I should be able to add pictures...

Proud new K5 owner

I've been wanting one for years and finally found one in great shape. Will post pics soon...

My name is Derek and I'm from Southern California, currently living in Salt Lake City, Utah. My K5 journey started with a yellow/white 78 Blazer that one of my customers gave to me, a wealthy Plastic Surgeon; I sell steel buildings. Well, it was in pretty rough shape as you might imagine, lots of rust, lots, but I got the bug. The 78 was enough to get me dreaming. So, I started thinking of all the fun my lady and I could have exploring the well developed trail system here in Northern and Southern Utah.

My next stop was the FourWheelParts Store where I was thrown out of the place for my violent, convulsing, sick reaction to the prices for new stuff. After picking myself up and dusting off, I started searching online classifieds for the parts I wanted -convinced that this could be done on the cheap. That search turned up an 87 Blazer with 6" front, 8" rear lift, D44 front and GM14 Rear, 4:56's all around, shocks, drive lines, et al; this would nicely compliment the 60K mile 454 that I had just pulled from a "part out" motor home for this project. That parts/donor truck was had for $400. The previous owner managed to blow up the TBI 350 and 700R4 simultaneously...wow.

The 78 was too rough, fifty hours of cutting and welding patch panels was not in my plan. I still didn't have a truck. The next step, with plenty of experience shopping and negotiating, I got picky, looking for the cleanest truck for the least money. The hunt for the deal is a big part of the fun for me and the deal I get will determine how I feel about what I end up with for a long time to come. After looking at a ton of beaters, mercilessly ravaged by weather, time, kids, dogs, cigarettes, slobs and rust -funny how much better things can look in a picture, and wasting a lot of my time, I found it; an "old guy truck".

Backing up a bit, a clean truck is a discount. Not always in money, but in your time. It's all of the stuff you won't have to do to end up with a clean truck. I learned this by rebuilding a lot of junk that people had torn up and abused, bought cheap. I learned it the hard way: thinking cheap is a deal...Nah -not always so. Look for clean, negotiate hard, be fair, and come out feeling good.

Ok, I like old guys. Most of the time, they know a lot and take care of things if for no other reason, then for the preservation of value. My 1991 Jimmy is one owner, except for a few years stint with the Grandson, a good guy -that the truck survived. Stock ride height, in fact all stock with aluminum running boards. No rust, super clean interior, everything works, and it was stored under a carport most of its life -nice paint. A high miler at 196K, but highway miles and everything always kept fixed and serviced, no big "to do" list with this one. The truck was advertised for $1500 on my local Classifieds Site and I ended up with it for $1200 with its original factory sticker. My late father was a true GM guy who drove a 72 blue 3/4 ton GMC long bed ever since I can remember. I love GMC's and Chevy's; this Jimmy is blue. Now the real fun can begin.

Thanks for reading my intro. Good to be here!

Alex in north Idaho. I recently bought a 76 Blazer. The motor is blown up but other than that the truck seems clean. Im new to restoration so ill probably be asking you guys a lot of questions. Hello, and i love your forums.

Awesome! Can I borrow your time machine so I can go back and buy a new 91 K5? :eek1:

Just kidding with ya. Welcome to CK5!

Hey, My name is Bobby Brown. I am sixteen and am very serious about building the "perfect" K5 Mudder/crawler/tower/dailydriver combination. While it will probably be a decade or longer for me to finish the goal (need money), I always have to start somewhere. I am in the Planning stage right now. Don't own one yet, but I will be starting a build thread soon to get started with getting the opinions of those who have done this before. Thanks!

Hello everyone. I am Steve from Chesapeake VA. Within the last 2 months I have purchased 2 blazers. The first is a 92 silverado with a 350 TBI for my daughter and I just got a 90 k5 Jimmy with the 6.2L diesel (Banks turbo), 700R4 and G80 with 3.43 gears. Thought I paid too much for Jimmy until I started looking at the body. It needs rocker panels (don't they all) and a small patch of rust (about 2 inches) to be fixed. The underneath in all areas is perfect. Not even any rust on the floorboards in the cabin under the carpet. Can't wait to start digging into the truck to make it perfection.

New B.C. Canada member

Hello, new member from Mission B.C. Canada.

Ive owned a couple of Jimmys in my time, typical 1/2 ton running gear with a 4" lift and 35" rubber. Ive always had a fun time with them, so i decided to purchase another one x number of years later. Not to mention ive recently moved to Mission where i am minutes from some good wheelin spots.

Ok, now to the new project... 1984 GMC Jimmy, 305-700r4-208TC. paid $800.

Plans are to do D60/14FF swap, 8" lift & 37" tires. Gonna run the stock motor/tranny/TC till i break it. In the meantime build up a 383 stroker turbo 400/205TC.

Did some horse tradin and ended up with a 79 Chevy donor truck that has all the desired parts i need(D60/14FF/383SBC/205TC/38"TSL).

Once i start gettin into the swap ill start a build thread.

BTW Great site, lots of useful information.

New to the K5 world

Howdy. I am Sean, in Bozeman, MT. I recently purchased a 69 K5 that I will be slowly restoring to what I hope can be a daily driver. I am looking to get it driving and running like new, and keeping it mostly stock. It starts, and drives, roughly. Steering is very loose. Stereo and heat don't seem to work. It needs a bit of rust repair and some paint, but those will mostly come after mechanical fixes. I do not have a garage, and will be doing all of my work in my on street parking spot. I've never done any auto repair work before so it will all be a learning experience for me. I'll get some photos up when I get a chance. If anyone has advice on where to start, please let me know.

Hello all. My name is Nathan and I have a 98 Cherokee. I am looking to get another Suburban here in the very near future. I had a 2000 crew cab long bed chevy 3500. And one of my favorite trucks Ive had was a 1991 1500 Suburban 4x4.

This time Im looking for a 2500 4x4 Suburban. Mainly for towing, limited off road.

Hey everyone my name is tom . I live in california and I have two k5s that I am in the process of building up. Looking forward to giving and getting advice from this forum

Hey people, some of you may recognise me as a Moderator on the Performance Years boards { vintage Pontiacs} or as a POCI Board member / Tech Advisor coordinator if you're a member of either of the above.

I'm the owner of Nixon's Automotive outside of Portland Indiana. I've also been an ASE Master Tech since 85, worked the line, parts counter, and did the Service Mgr gig at a Buick Pontiac GMC Truck dealership from 85-95. I own several vintage Pontiacs, 67-91 Chevy trucks, and what's relevant to this forum, a 75 K5 Blazer, an 80 K5 GMC Jimmy, and an 88 K5 Military surplus Blazer.

The 75 and 80 are projects, the 88 is my newest daily driver project.

Mike

Welcome to CK5, stop in and say hello, this is a great place to make your first post and tell us a little about yourself/truck. :D

bought a 70 k5 last dec. and drove it in the winter spring and summer with no doors, top, or tailgate. because i knew that this fall (2012) i would be starting the restoration process of my dream truck. i had, for the past ten years, searched relentlessly for a 70 jimmy that had a 350, sm465 and a dana 20. it wasnt until last dec that i found it. my kids immedeatly named it "rusty". we could see each other thru the holes in it. i will be posting pics as soon as someone helps me figure out how to load pix. like, what are the steps? how does my picture of the frame have a http address? anyway im really looking foward to sharing our family pride and journey with you all.
