Introductions & Greetings

Welcome. I lived in Anaheim for 26 years. Castners Garage in Placentia. They still know how to work on old stuff.

Feet on the ground !

Hi everyone. Fresh off the boat, so to speak. Started looking for an older K5 Blazer about a year and a half ago. Everything I found was jacked up 6 feet or slammed and you couldn't run over a sewer grate without the cross member hitting. then one night I was web surfing and lo and behold, I find a one family, bought new in 1988. I stumbled across a 1988 K5, a one family owned since brand new, the son had just spent about $6K in maintenance work done. Never been jack up into the stratosphere and in general is the tightest riding truck I've ever drove. Interior is like new, the owner put on seat covers since it was new so the interior is perfect. I do need to take out the dash cluster and install a new 'Printed circuit" and a new oil pressure gauge, and since it sat in the hot Texas sun, some light dash plate trim and a new dash cover.

That and a complete new paint job. But I'm only going to do it right. Right now it looks OK from 30 feet, get closer and it looks like it was painted with a mop. But the truck is totally rust-free. so it's going to be a de-chroming and a lot of sanding and a good enamel two-tone painting. It is a top of the line 'Silverado' and I told the lady who bought it new, she'll be proud of what I've done. These old K5's are rare and finding some parts are a real PITA to find. Looking for a rear window switch right now ? I'd post a few pictures but I haven't figured that part out yet. But I'm proud to be a member here. It's got a date with the body shop end or the month.

Another new guy here...my names Scott and I live in Grand Junction, CO. Been reading posts for awhile and decided to join the fun. I'm partial to the Suburbans, have a 96' 1/2 ton that the wife has taken over for her daily driver. It has a 6" Fabtech lift, used to have 35's on it but she was having problems climbing up in it, so I stepped back down to 33's and put running boards on it. I'm currently upgrading an 89' 3/4 ton that has 101k original miles on it. Monstalined the whole exterior of the burb, stripped out everything behind the second seats and bedlined the whole backend up to the window trim. Getting ready to replace my headliner and stick in a new stereo system. Planning on putting 35's on it and going with a Skyjacker softride 4" lift in the front and going with ORD's shackle flip in the rear. This will be my new hunting vehicle when I'm done.

Looks better than one might think ?

The K5 looks like it needs some work, but solid under side. Makes sure it's not a Sandy storm car. but it sure looks like a later model. I bought a 1988 and it has the same front end, you know we all are doing the motoring public a service as these old K5's are slowly disappearing.

Look for info on these rigs, K5 seems like my kind of place!! Ive seen some rigs here that have been posted in other build threads on other sites... Expedition Portal, Pirate, etc...

But CO is next door so, I paid my dues to support the site. :thumb:

How's it going? Name's Niles. I am from Northern California. Mendocino county is my current place of residence. I am the proud owner of a 1987 K5 Blazer. It has a six inch pro comp lift, 35x12.50 R15 BFG tires on 15x8 MB rims. Stock engine with flowmaster muffler. Sony deck, JL Audio 500 watt mono block amp, two 12" kicker subwoofers in a powerwedge box, and some 6x9 speakers on the sides. Everything from rap, rock, reggae to country music will be heard in my ride.

I believe most people on here would agree with me. The NP205 is highly over rated. The only good thing about them is brute strength. The NP208 has a better low range (2.61:1 compared to an anemic 1.96:1). The NP205 is heavy, loud, and poor shifting.

Unless you are building a doubler, there isn't much reason to run an NP205.

I do agree with this. I like the better ratio. I have yet to have an issue with some hard wheeling on this 208.

I would put on the table the 271/273 cases are as strong or stronger than a 205 possibly even the 241HD.

208s are Playmobile stuff compared to modern aluminum full size chain cases.

Hey everyone

Finally joined this forum after reading so many insightful responses from members on here. I have a 91 full size and have been installing a rebuilt transmission for the first time and this forum has made it a lot easier for me. Thanks everyone :waytogo:.

From what I read on the diesel forums this is true.. But the 205 is heavy and poor shifting.. And strong..
