Is a \'81 sm465 the same as a 1976?

I just made a trade for a 1976 mod 205/sm 465 combo... the sm465 in my 1981 is in great shape.. can I ditch the 208 and swap the 205 in directly? in other words are the sm465's the same in the two different years?
thanks

not exactly sure on the 81 but the newer(83on) the 465 with 208 was a 32 spline output instead of the 10 spline. i would think they are all the same for the 208

I believe your 465 will have a long 32 spline tailshaft since it was originally married to a 208. A 76 465 would have had a short 10 spline tailshaft.

Yes, you can do it but you're going to need some more (hard to find) parts like a 32 spline 205 and a different adapter. The 10 spline version 465/205 combo is very common so you might consider swapping the whole combo and selling your take outs to recover some of the expense.

32 spline 205 isn't that rare, but the adapter to mate it to a 465 sure is.

One more difference is the speedometer cable hook up is different (they switched sides) don't know if it changed when the splines did but that is another difference.

Don't know if this will apply to you but I have a 1968 4wd 465 and a 1989 2 wd 465 and there is a diffence that made a problem for me. The webbing on the 2 tranny's are different which caused me problems when I was bolting the 68 tranny to the 89 tranny's bellhousing. The 89 was designed so all the bolts connecting the bellhousing to the tranny were on the outside of the tranny. The 68's bellhousing used two bolts that went in from inside of the bellhousing. This meant the 68 tranny had two threaded holes, if I recall correctly, both of the top holes. As I was using the 89's bellhousing, I drilled the two threaded holes out of the 68 tranny and found that when I went to insert bolts from the outside of the tranny, into the bellhousing, I had big interference with some of the webbing on the tranny. I had to go with allen headed socket bolts and had to grind off some of the webbing and cut the allen head wrench down so I could get it on to two of the bolts. I don't know when the change occurred in the webbing, maybe it was only a 2wd difference. Just be aware.
