Is a TH350 Strong enough or do I need a TH400?

I am building a 1978 K5. Plans include-

12" Superlift suspension lift
3" body lift
44" tires
ORD doubler kit
434ci SBC, 450hp
Dana 60, 14 bolt FF axles

Is the TH350 a strong enough tranny to handle all that stress or do I need a TH400. Also, how hard would it be to swap to a manual transmission?

From my own experience go with the TH400. I snapped the mainshaft in a TH350 in my 72 Blazer with 15 in lift 44s and a worked 350 sbc. You have a 1 ton drivetrain otherwise D60 14 bolt, go with a 1 ton trans. TH350=1/2+3/4 ton. TH400=1 ton.

Just give the trans a good rebuild , run the lowest gears you can find for those tires , and don't worry about it . If you break , you replace it .

Drag Racers run way more power through those .

44's , and 15 inches total lift in Texas , I doubt your rockcrawling :thumb:

Got an email addy? Since you're not a paying member, I can't PM you. If you give me your email addy, I will send you info on a 12" Superlift system I have, complete, and brand new 3" body lift kit, too.

I'm in central Kansas.

Oh no, Wes your pimping parts and it's not the for sale forum. Watch out someone might cry about that.

Thats why I asked for an addy. :wink1:

That, and I only said I would send info. I did not say I had anything for sale. Just info on it. :wink1:

If you already have a built 350 lying around run it until it dies. Otherwise, build a 400. Cores are cheap and the build won't cost much more (if any), and it will be much more durable than the 350.
