seems everyone runs for 38s and stuff. can you have fun in a stock rig?

i think a 1/2 ton with lockers, 31s and a manual tranny would go a lot of places... more if you didn't mind sheet metal dings.

I have a lot of fun in my stock blazer. It has 32 inch tires. Gets me through the trails during deer hunting season and gets me throught the snow. Never gotten stuck or anythnig, but then again im not going over huge rocks or very deep mud puddles.

hell yeah, stock is lots O fun, the problem with a lot of people is they come here, and read and it seams everyones has or is talking about one tons and big tires and lots of expencive mods.

The key thing is to learn how to fix your own rig or the hobby will get way to expencive way to fast. Get out there and wheeel your rig, as you get to no more and more about your rig you will be able to see your need and what YOU want not what others may see fit for there truck.

Invest in good straps and places to hook them and go have fun the build will enevitably come with some time.

Thing is most of us talking about our big tires one tons and lockers started out stock. Mine was stock (well I trimmed the fenders and put 35s on it right away) for nearly a year. Now I have 40s one tons lockers etc. etc. etc. If you start with a stock rig you will be a better driver too. I say put a locker in it and have a blast

Mine is all stock, except 30x9.50 tires and wagon wheels. If the trail gets too gnarly, I just quit, and turn around,:D :D

Darkshadow basically covered it.

I started off stock two years ago. Just this month I got my lift and tires. In my opinion the best thing you can do is lurk around here and read and learn. These guys have done it all as far as Blazers.

Don't get caught up in all the 1ton/42" tires stuff unless you have the $ and a reliable DD. It is easy to do. Ask BigBlaze, he has everyone and there dog(including me)telling him what they think.

You can have a lot of fun with a stock/slightly modified K5.

Just don't try to do 1ton obstacles. Like Darkshadow said "learn how to wheel with a stock rig".

I'll shut the hell up now:D

Some of the most fun I had was when my truck was stock. It was all new and you really have to study which line you are going to take. When doing the small tire stuff try not to use a spotter. Try to figure it out on your own.
I still enjoy just being off of the concrete, no matter what I'm driving.

Some of the best times I've had offroad were in stock 2 wheel drive trucks, if you can believe it. This is my first 4x4, its stock, and its a blast. I'm just trying to upgrade as I repair things that break.

My K30 crew cab is stock. I don't neccessarely "wheel" it but I am a farmer and have it out in the field plenty through different things.

yeah, i wheel stock. twice last saturday. outdid my friend's jeep. but how is that possible when the jeep is trail rated? haha. in the three years i've had the k5, it's only been stuck twice. both times, the mudhole was huge and way more rutted than we thought. i hung the axles and the tires were off the ground. i don't care what you drive. 4 wheels in the air means you're stuck. my 31s will be replaced by much more aggressive 33s soon, and i'm putting a 4" lift on. mild mods, but should help in a few tricky spots.

basic things i remember on the trail:
-leaving your comfort zone (within reason) helps you learn and is fun.
-the truck can handle more than you think it can, but abuse adds up (skidplates do not make the truck invincible)
-more throttle is not always the answer. finesse and planning work better and break less parts.
-never overreact.

well i am completly stock. 85 k5, 31" tires (i think) 4 speed manual. i dont really wheel too much. i did go out in the snow this winter a couple times, and it was a blast. never got stuck. i dont plan to do much to the truck, maybe bigger tires and a tiny lift. other than that just have fun with it.

My k5 is a DD. I wheeled mine as above pic stock& locked with 33s for many years.
Its still got semi stock 10 bolts, locked front and rear, and lifted 4" .Still running 33s with upgraded stronger axles and u joints. It'll go pretty much anywhere i point it. I have no intention of going 1 ton. Dont like the added weight and the hit in gas mileage Kinda impractial for a DD tow rig.
The only things I have broken are U joints which is a common occurance for any type axle on the rocks, and Springs and pins in a lockrite locker. But I am easy on the gas offroad and take time to pick the right line.
