Is God trying to keep me from offroading?

This weekend was an epic fail. First, the trail run I was supossed to be tagging along with got cancelled. No biggy, I call up a buddy of mine to see if he'd like to do a little exploring, maybe find some dirt and he's in.

We drive about 40 minutes through back country roads, which is not fun in my truck. 3.73 gears turning 35's, wicked loud exhaust, no radio, rear drums that barely seem to stop my rig... ect, I'm sure alot of your guys's trucks dont have the greatest road manners either.

Anyways we FINALLY get there and as I come to a stop, a noticeable cloud of smoke floats past me. "What the hell?" I pull over and hop out, my friend pulls up behind me and says "Yeah I noticed a little smoke from your truck a couple times..." WELL THANKS for letting me know! Haha anyways poked my head under it and there is oil EVERYWHERE. Then saw it was coming from the oil filter, which I just did the oil change last week. I check, and its tight. I clean it off and notice its actually coming from the filter housing gasket up above. (mind you it was about 10 degrees and I didn't know the area we were at all)

So we run the nearest gas station and buy oil and gum, I made myself just about sick chewing the entire pack and sticking it to the filter housing to see if I can stop or slow the leak. This trick has worked for me before, but not this time. so I just added lots of oil and we drove home, stopping here and there to recheck the level and watching the pressure guage like a hawk.

Got home and figured Someone just didn't want me offroading this weekend. Heres the filter housing fix:

the o ring was in there like that, broken, right where the oil was puking from.

the o rings for the cooler lines were about shot too, so replaced the are.

all sealed up.

Nice. Mine started puking on my plow truck during a storm, took the cooler off, put a filter adapter on from an old block I had...good to go.

I'm going to have to check mine... I've got an oil leak around that area as well. Been like that for a year :( but it hasn't been "too bad" (in my eyes at least) yet...

Glad to see you made it home safe!

Curious, you went off-roading, looking for trails, planned on going with a group, knowing full well you're back brakes don't work all that great?

Interesting.

And yes, those O-rings are an item that need to be replaced on higher mileage motors. I replaced mine on the old motor when I resealed the oil pan stuff, they came in the kit.

I think I need that kit... what kit is it? The general engine gasket kit?

oil pan gasket kit for that year that has those oil cooler setups, mine is an '89, I don't remember having to ask specifically for the additional seals & gaskets, was suprised when I opened the kit. :D

its not that my brakes don't work great. i actually have a good hard pedal. just underpowered for the 35's. definately want to step up to the rear disc conversion when the funds are right.

i just called my local parts store and asked for an oil filter housing gasket set. it came with alot of extra o rings and gaskets that mine didn't have, but I'm sure they put it together with many vehicles in mind.

I throw them away every time I come across one and replace it with a basic oil filter adapter.

Didn't you swap in a 14bsf? Did it not have the bigger 13" drum brakes? Mine will lock up if I'm not easy with the pedal. I get the "brrrrp brrrrp brrrp" from the tires as I feather the pedal during hard braking. Usually from the highway off ramps or stopping and turning into my driveway. I even adjusted them down to try and compensate.

Yeah the 14b drums are enormous. and i also can lock up the rears if i stop hard, esp in the rain. but when i did the 14b swap i went from a mild 33" to the hardcore 35s so they just seem to carry more momentum. so maybe im just still getting used to that.

what area of connecticut are you in? i just got a new (to me) 350 in my k5 and it's gonna get lifted my next free weekend.

i have a few friends who like to go to portland for mostly mud running. one has an 90's SAS chevy on 38.5's, two run militaries, one kid with an almost stock dodge on 80's vintage "heavy duty lug trail breaker"s that look like bobcat tires.
