Is it safe to use RTV?

The front input shaft retainer seal on my SM465 busted when I was pulling the retainer to cut it down to fit my newly arrived ranger over drive unit. Is it safe to use red RTV instead of a new seal? I only ask this because a new seal is damn near 5 days out if I order one. None of the local shops have one.

By seal do you mean double-lip seal or gasket?

If it's just a gasket, it may be required to create the proper clearances, I'm not sure. Try a manila envelope or two stacked.

If it's a double-lip seal like you drive/press in to seal to the shaft, no, RTV will NOT work.

Can anyone confirm that the gasket is necessary on the 465 input seal retainer?

I know gaskets aren't necessary on many others, such as 205 seal retainers.

Can anyone confirm this?

Getting ready to put everything back together (trans is already in the truck with RTV instead of a gasket) and I'd really like to avoid having to pull everything apart later.

Thanks

I have always used the gasket with a very thin film of RTV with good results. Almost everytime I used RTV by itself it starts leaking later on. Too bad someone does not offer gaskets that have the silicon rubber embed into the gasket frame (like the late model stuff) for the older applications...
