I did a web search and searched on here, but couldn't really find anything. My question is this Is the 8 lug 3/4 Dana 44 any bit stronger than the 6 lug 1/2 ton version? I can't find a reasonable priced D60/14B round here, and I found a guy with a whole truck for 600 bucks.

Some well experienced sources here have noted 3/4t D44HD's with thicker center sections and .500 wall axle tubes.

I appreciate the replies, but like everyone else the funds are short, but I guess I don't really have a choice. Need to find some unsuspecting old man with a d60 sitting in his feild and don't have any idea what he has, lol.

Buying a D60 is only the start of the cost. Selectable locker is 1,000, limited slip is $700, ring and pinion is super expensive, and you need new wheels. Probably looking at a minimum of 3k to get the swap done with some traction device unless you can find a great deal on the axle with the right gears.

Sounds to me like you have already found a reasonably priced D60/FF14 set.
$600 for a whole truck with those axles would be a good deal almost anywhere.

If the other option is swapping to an 8-lug D44 or 10-bolt then most of these costs get washed out. New wheels are the same, and gears and lockers are just a small amount more expensive for the 60 vs. the 44.

The 8 lug D44 is gonna be a little stronger, but not anywere that matters....

Its still gonna break shafts lol

Just do what I did. Run what you brung while you save some $$$. I ran 38.5in Boggers on a bone stock 10-bolt for two seasons before I could afford a D60. Paid $1200 for a 60 and 14bff combo then stuck six bills into the D60 (still no locker :( ) and then did the swap. I never broke anything on the 10 bolt, even thought I drove it fairly hard.

Yea I'm running 37's right now, and did some minor rock climbing, got the truck nice and cambered this weekend, and now I have a real bad grinding noise on the right front w/ hubs locked in and in 4 wheel. When I get off in the morning gonna check the hub/x-fer, cuz it quit as soon as I shifted it back to 2 wheel, and the axle spun freely with hub unlocked. Just preparing for the worst, cuz broke or not, going back out this weekend, maybe after a trip to the junk yard, LOL!!
