I have a 83 with a 6.2 engine . I have had a terrible belt squeal with the Alternator belt . I replaced the belt and the squeal went away and it stopped charging . Found a bad connection on battery post of the alternator . Replaced that still no charge . Decided to have the alternator tested and found it was charging but had a bad bearing . Installed alternator and replaced belt and it was charging !!! I ran it for a few minutes and went to check belt and pulley and alternator whas so hot it burned my fingers !!! Do alterators get this hot ? If not then why is this happening ? The alternator was the same way .Now my belt squeal is back also after running it Thanks !!

Did you put a new alternator on? Or just reinstall the old one? A bad bearing can make a squealing noise and make the case get hot.

Mine started squealing and then it killed a fusible link. The squealing immediately stopped, but the voltage gauge jumped up to 18+VDC. :eek1:

I replaced the link with solid aluminum (I had it on hand) and the squealing came back. Then it melted the aluminum. :eek1:

Turns out it was a bad voltage regulator.

Warm yes, hot like he is desribing, no.

Have you verified that everything is lined up? It almost sounds like one of the brackets is bent causing the belt to rub the pulley and heat everything up.

I would think some heat but the nut that holds the pulley is hot I can't touch it ?

I wanted everyone to know I fixed problem !!!!Bad connections and bad battery . thanks everyone

Lucky you..
