I was driving to pay some bills that got backed up due to my room mate while i was at ocs and i drove by a dealership with a 1973 fj cruiser. it looked clean and the bottom was sprayed with some rust protective things. it doesn't seem to be leaking and it ran fine. i didn't get a chance to drive it but everything seems to be in order. it has no top or doors and the no rear seat. but for an around town car i think it would be cool. he wanted 5,500 for it. i am trying to sell my 95 nissan 240sx because i have no need for the k5 a 240 and a motorcycle. and he said if i brought it up he would consider a trade. i have no need for another vehicle but it is something i always wanted. what would you guys do. i have no plans on lifting it or adding anything maybe just a soft top and doors. just wanted some of you opinions on the fj. if it is worth it( i know it is pretty solid)? or some potential problems

FJ Cruiser is the new funky one. The old ones are Toyota Land Cruisers, model number of FJ-number, most likely an FJ40 (two doors, short wheelbase, like a Jeep CJ.) Other models are longer wheelbase (FJ60 maybe?) or pickup-style (rare), etc. Often called "TLC", but not 'cuz they need it.

They're small, like a Jeep, but Japanese. Simple, reliable; the Jeep people say that FJ stands for "Foreign Jeep", and generally accept them as part of the "Jeep Thing" hooey. I'd rather have one of these than a Jeep, especially pre-smog (I'm in CA.)

Me, I'd run it as is, and if the engine blew up, drop a 350 or a 4.3 V6 into it. Lots of conversion stuff for them.

I donno about pricing on TLC's, but I personally wouldn't pay five grand for a vehicle with no doors or top, especially if I was thinking about streeting it. Given the age, unless it's restored to showroom condition, I can see paying maybe half what the guy wants. Though you prolly know this from trying to sell your Nissan, it's a crappy time to be selling cars (high gas prices, lousy economy) which means it's a buyer's market. If you really want the FJ, wait ;)

If its on a dealers lot, there's probably quite a bit of fluff in the price, plus you know they're not going to offer you beans for your trade. Take your trade in, then offer him cash difference of about a thousand less than what your willing to pay. Walk out the door and leave him your phone#. It make take a little time, but I bet you get pretty close to the price you want.
