I got an 88 K5 with 2.73 gears and I'm dropping in a mild 454 it has a 700R4 tranny and I'm wondering if those gears are going to kill my tranny? Oh yeah it has 33s for tires, and what can I do to prolong the life of the tranny until I can afford to get some different gears (just bought a house today so I'm broke) and I know to keep out of the gas pedal but its for the dunes so I will have to hit it a little, any advice?

I don't think a stock 700r4 will do very well behind a mild big block no matter what you've got for gearing! That said, I'd put a 3 speed in your truck if you plan to run 2.73s and 33s for any length of time. I once ran 3.08s and 35s, and my poor little diesel with a 5 speed was totally useless in OD, and barely held 60 mph in 4th gear (1:1) pinned downhill.

The ideal would be 4.56 gears and an overdrive transmission for 33s, in my opinion

I'm thinking 4.10s but I cant afford them right now, I want the MPGs of the OD so a 3sp is out....

Mine lasted a year and a half, never had a problem. But with 2.73 gears you won't ever see od. I never did anyways..

Where in so. Ca. are you? I have a set of axles for CHEEEEP. I am in Bakersfield.

I'm actually in Mexico now, in Mexicali right on the border with Calexico ca. and how much is CHEEEEP? maybe next time I go visit grandma in Tehachapi I can have my uncle from Bakersfield pick them up if you still have them....

Don't use overdrive until you get lower gears, other than that it isn't the most heavy duty auto but many people make that combo work

2 words,

Tranny cooler!!!!!!!

Had 3 700r4's without coolers. They ALL died early.....

LIke 150.00 for a pallet of parts. Front and rear 10 bolts and all kinds of extra parts too.
I will pull the covers tomorrow to see what the ratios are and I will let you know. Odd thing is I picked the parts up from a friend that lives in Tehachapi just a few weeks ago.

Ya let me know, I might be going down for Thanksgiving so I might be interested if you still have the parts :waytogo:
