Some parts are a direct bolt up but just as many are not.
- The bellhousing bolt pattern is the same.
- The torque converter / clutch will interchange but the flex plate / flywheels wont.
- I believe the frame side of the motor mounts are the same but the engine side bracket is not (although the internet can argue that they work ).
- The radiator and shroud will obviously interchange but how well they work is a case by case thing based on how big or small the radiator is.
- The top hose will usually interchange but the lower wont.
- The front accessory brackets are different but the actual accessories will transfer over (assuming same rotation).
- The distributor will interchange if the bbc is not a tall deck.
- The exhaust could work (provided it's not undersized for the new motor) but it'll take some muffler shop work to fit it up as the collectors are placed different.
- Wiring / connectors interchanging is hit or miss, on carb'd motors most interchange but if TBI not all of the sensor connectors fit.
I swapped a 454 into a 1/2t 84 I had years ago. I went from 350 auto to 454 4-speed. Didn’t touch motor mounts, used clam shells off 350, big block accessories. Did same thing to 79 Malibu. Originally 305 4-speed, dropped in a 454 kept the 4-speed. Didn’t change motor mounts, used small block clam shells. I used TBI small block brackets with kwikfit adaptors. Fit nice, tucked everything in close.
I put a 454 from a 75 3/4 ton 2wd with four speed into my 77 3/4 400 motor auto turbo 350 4x4 truck years ago.
Only thing that didn't swap right over was the exhaust didn't line up. everything else i needed was there between the two trucks
But i went thru a few transmissions after that. should have put a turbo 400 in it
