remove the steering wheel lock plate without using a lockplate-removing tool?

You can do It with a small screw driver and needle nose pliars but it's abit of work.

new question.

a random bolt fell out of this column after i got it all apart. it's basically the reverse of a torx bolt - the torx shape sticks up instead of being indented into the head of the bolt. any idea what this is to?

I believe that should be one of the ones that holds the column together way down inside. These are the ones that loosen up and lead to the sloppy tilt columns...although they might be twelve points, torx are six.

I've seen some of those inverted torx on a late model S10, but not on a truck like yours. Sure it's not a 12 point?

I believe Dorian hit it, the tilt mechanism is held together with 3 bolts like that. They may be used elsewhere in the column but in the tilt for sure.

Well you can buy those sockets, so you better grab one. I'd tear into it, loctite those suckers, and tighten it all back up.
