Is this '74 K5 worth it, or should I keep looking?

Most square bodies here look that bad or worse, and still fetch a grand or at least 100 over scrap value(600 here!)- for parts,a plow truck,or winter beater...

Some of the ones I bought back in the day for 300 - 600 bucks were no better, and I welded them back together and had a blast in them..the trucks you dont worry about scratching up or beating on,or lie awake worrying about being stolen, are always the most fun to own in the end..

Though I agree its rotted, missing parts, and probably need a ton to just make it roadable.the clean title, running gear and frame, and at least "some" potential of it being rebuildable is worth 500 bucks so someone who needs or wants a real project,or needs parts..full convertables aren't getting any easier to come by..but then,in AZ,I'd think there should be a few that are not priced outrageously that are minty compared to here too..

What do you guys think of this truck? How hard is it to retrofit a non-AC truck with AC?

Sellers Description:

I have a Blazer that has been sitting in the garage for a while, and now I am willing to trade for something.

Body is good, motor is good, rebuilt transmission, needs tires, brakes, some tuning (carb etc.), and a battery.

Let me know what you have.

That looks a ton better than that other rig. Here's LMC's replacement page on the AC to give you an idea of the cost...it isn't a cheap proposition to put the AC back in the truck. But if you get it for a good price, it's all relative I suppose.

Man, your location is in Arizona! Why are you looking at rusted trucks?

Official answer: I would pass for sure. From the few pics I couldn't see many redeeming qualities. Even at scrap price, you're going to sink a small fortune in it even for just a reliable trail rig.

X2. Got a rust free Nevada K5 coming overe here on a truck next week. Hard to find anything rust free here. Looks too far gone as far as the rust goes though. Thats just the outer skin, whats the frame, inner panels like? I'd keep looking. Plenty non-runners out there in better shape for about 1k if you look hard. Now this other one ^ looks pretty good.

Do you REALLY need ac in a full vert?

My ac doesn't work in my 85, and ive never wished I had it with the top on, or especially with the top off.

Its a full convertible!..take the top off!..:D...thats why it dont have A/C,you dont need it..

Better weld it back together good FIRST ,before removing the top though.....or it might sag a little in the middle...

Don't NEED ac in the truck, mine is capable of having it, never really worked right since I bought it, then the compressor died, so it's been almost 10 years with no ac I would guess that I lived there and drove the Burb around without it. You just learn to make your trips as short as possible. Take a lot of water with you, maybe a small towel.

That first Blazer? I would almost guarantee it is NOT native to Arizona, even being up in the mountains with the snow. Arizona doesn't use salt on their roads, they use that volcanic cinder rock stuff. You may get a bit of surface rust on any exposed metal, but nothing that's going to rot through like that.

And yeah, no way would I have driven 4 hours to look at that thing.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess my main reasons for looking at this truck were:

1. Its a full convertible
2. Its cheap (6-700)
3. It is set up for AC
4. Clear title
5. "stock condition"
6. Its a project

There are quite a few other K5s for sale that aren't rusty, but they are either chopped and dropped with a 91 front clip, monster truck lifted, the owner wants a ridiculous price (I'm talking 10,000+), the owner claims all this new work done but truck looks "off" or they don't include pics of said work, the listing/owner seem sketchy, the truck doesn't have AC, or they only want to trade for something else (which is silly if I have the money why not take that instead).

Again thanks for the replies. I'll keep thinking this one over and keep looking.

ABQ and around NM you can find those cheap. here is one with AC priced a little higher but I am sure rust is not nearly as bad. I am willing to bet you can get him to send you much better pics. Only downside is price is a little high and its not as close. There are a few others from time to time i would keep looking if for the right one.
