I found this for sale and was about to bid when I noticed something fishy. It looks to my like the mounts are on the wrong side. The should be on the same sice as the sector shaft but they are on the opposite side. It is advertised as a 1 ton chevy steering box but I'm not sure how that can be. Tell me what I don't know.

It is a saginaw box, but the mounts are on the wrong side, so it would not mount to a 73-91 chevy frame.

Could be from a 88 & up 1-ton, but I am not familiar with those rigs.

That is a saginaw steering box from a 1980 or later 2wd model truck or possibly a Jeep. It will not work on 73-87 (91) 4wd trucks.

Umm, 2WD, yes ... but it looks to me like it mounts to the *right* of the frame rail, not the left... so I don't think it'll go onto *any* 73-91 C/K truck.

Aaron, the later model 2wd trucks the box is mounted inboard of the frame. Like i said though, it could be a Jeep box as well. Being that it is tapped for hydro assist would better lead me to believe that it is from a Jeep.

AFAIK all the Jeep steering boxes are mounted outside of the frame like our K-series trucks. At least the YJ's and TJ's I've dealt with are like that.

The newer trucks often mounted the steering box inside the frame rail, I'm bet that is a steering box from a newer (IFS) Chevy truck.

Okay, yeah. When you said

1980 or later 2wd model truck

you mean that the fittings are the 1980+ style, i.e. O-ring, not compression fitting ... but not that it would fit a 1980+ C truck. I read that as implying it would fit a 1980+ truck.

I seem to recall that Scouts used those boxes too but were backwards somehow ... but then this sectgor shaft is the 2WD style. ::shrug::

they still mount the same as the 1/2 tons. i have a stearing box out of a 1ton 2wd 91 chevy pick up in my k5 for my crossover

How in the world is it going to mount on the outside of the frame rail without the steering shaft pointing the wrong way? You are talking about a pre91 K5 aren't you?

im talking about the 1 ton pick up trucks they are still the same body style as the k5 blazers up untill like 91.

For 88-91, the crewcabs, Blazer/Jimmy's, Suburbans (and some, but not all, cab-and-chassis trucks) kept the old body style, yes.

However, they also have the old style frames, solid axles, and the same mounting for the steering box. It's not like they have the new frames and IFS under the old body.

Just to clarify.

I can't help myself right now so i was just going to come straight out and ask you how stupid you are to think this pic is a 2wd with a front 4wd axle with leaf springs sitting right in this pic until i noticed that it is a conversion in the making. :haha:

Now i'm pretty sure the steering box in question is from a 1988 and later 2wd truck.
