I went to the local chevy dealer to price out a new engine and was told for a brand new block and installation including new oil, sparks and wires it would cost me $4,100. sounds good to me but wanted a second third and fourth opinion. So lets have it fellas all opinions welcome

Depends on which engine your getting, but yeah thats not to bad off a deal

Buddy of mine just bought a 1989 blazer that had a new 350 installed in 2006. They didnt really change anything. Maybe new cap and rotor wires and stuff. But his receipt was 5100$$

that is about right but you can do it cheaper for less. i put one the wifes tahoe same motor. i did cam position and crank position sencers, water pump, hoses upper and lower, plugs wires , cap, rotor, fuel filter, knock sencer, with intake gaskets, all from the dealer for about 3200.00 put it in about 6 hours. the only thing that is tricky on those is the distibutor 0 deg plus or minus 2 deg. if not it the check engine light will come on. just mark it good before you take it out. last thing the oil cooler lines take them off. those line leak like hell. two 3/8 plugs at the oil filter housing to block them off and your good.

GMPP sells a replacement long block for that application that is a 383 designed specifically to work with all the factory injection system. its $4g's if i remember right

You could build one hell of an engine for $4100.

LOL been awhile since you built one??? your looking at nearly 1000.00 just in machine work and another 1000.00 in parts to rebuild everything and then once its done you have no warranty because you did it yourself . add to that the time it takes to remove, rebuild, and re-install your looking at 2-3 weeks minimum . thats along time if its your only mode of transport.

4100 is a hell of a deal for having a Brand New engine with a good warranty and having it installed.

Yep I've put a few in its a pretty potent little motor especially for the price and the warranty is good.

Very true. I forget sometimes that I know that right people. So I guess I take that back:doah:. "I" could build one hell of a motor for that kind of money. Lol.

Yeah, having connections helps . I still build all my own engines but with the price of these crate motors its getting harder to justify it

well thats out the door, including installation and warranties so far sounds like the best deal unless the 383in. is at the same price ! but I highly doubt that :D

Very true!!! My last couple of rebuilds really made me question why I didn't just buy a new crate motor. I have a block that i started getting ready to build a 383 with that's been sitting in my basement that will probably never get built now, it has $600 of machine work in it alone! I love doing as much as possible myself but...

Ok I'll bite, who and/or what is GMPP ? A 383in installed for $4100. ?
As for the original motor it's rings are going. Smokes like a hunters cabin in the winter. so if Imma do a ring job, might as well do the whole damn thing. (besides I just picked it up and it's super clean. I'd rather rebuild than a car payment !) :thumb:

GMPP stands for General Motors Performance Parts

the 383 he's talking about is not 4100.00 though the last one I put in was closer to 5000.00 not installed
