I'm new here, and I just found a 1989 K5 Jimmy. It has the 5.7 with a 3 speed manual with granny low. Has some rust down. low just behind both doors. The interior is near perfect except the dash is cracked from the sun. Everything works except the power door locks. At cold startup, had some blue smoke for a couple of minutes. It has just over 133k mi on it. Asking $3999. What do you all think? Is it worth it?

Any truck is only worth what someone will pay for it. Sounds like a cool truck, but without pics and more info, I can't say if it is worth that to me. I, personally, am looking for an automatic, but others wouldn't drive one. Also, these trucks bring different money in different parts of the country these days.

Sorry, no pics. Not much more info either. It does drive really well, and has an almost new set of 31x10.50x15 Michelins on it.

Rust you can see from the exterior...guaranteed to be near fatal rust where you can't see it.

Smokes for a while when you start it...

$4000 is way too much money for a major rust project. You can buy rust projects all day long for $1000.

Don't ever make the mistake of playing down the rust on a K5.

I bought a '90 with rust, with my eyes wide open and after a thorough check to see how much I'd be cutting out and replacing. It was still more extensive than I thought...but I only paid $700 for it.

Ok, so why not?

You basicly asked if a partialy rusted, slightly smoking, normal dash cracked and small electrical problem is worth $4000. Without pictures.

I say no because there are lots of good deals popping all over for less money.

Just answering your question

oh yeah, $3999 sounds like a car lot price. i'd expect fresh black undercoat/paint on the entire underside of the truck. That crap doesn't actually do anything but make it harder for you to see problem areas until after it's titled in your name. At that point it fades or peels off.

I'd expect mileage to be listed as 'unknown due to age' when it comes to paperwork. Chances are real good the mileage is wrong.

I typical k5 like that is valued anywhere from $500-$2000. Having a stick pushes the value up but not to 4 grand. If it were the exact truck I was looking for (IE you want a stick) Id maybe pay around $1800 and be ready to fix the rust and do heads on it.

If you can get them to come (WAY) down on the price though, that is a good find. EFI and SM465 combos are pretty rare.

Ok, thanks. Like I said, I'm just stepping into the K5 world. I have no idea what they're worth, but I really haven't even come across any cheaper around here. I'll keep looking.
