My 1984 K5 305 w/ 700r tranny has a leak. Its the shifter rod seal on the drivers side of the Tranny case. Where the shifter linkage is.

I tried to replace the seal, its only the size of a 50cent piece. I dug out the old seal bits by bits, pounded the new seal in and its leaking worse than ever.

What should I do?

You probably cut the seal lip when you slide it over the shifter shaft so you will need to replace the seal again and to help keep from cutting the next seal you might put one rap of electrical tape over the shaft where the shaft is notched for the shifter bracket.

Sometimes the bushing in the case (If it even has one!) is worn egg shaped, and no seal will be able to seal if the shaft wobbles around in the bushing, not for long anyway...I spent a miserable LONG day trying to install a bushing & seal in a Torque-Flite mopar truck trans, and when I finally got it done,it still dripped some ATF out, though nowhere near as bad as before..still,I felt it was a waste of a day and effort!..

Maybe the shaft has a groove from the old seal cut into it,if that is why it is leaking there might be a "speedi-sleeve" available to correct that ..

Going through the same issues myself, going to check it out later this afternoon. Already replaced the seal on the gear selector shaft but I still have a leak some where.
