Well I picked up a 1970 K5 from my brother in law who gave up on the project before he even started. Didn't cost me a dime!!! :bow:

At some point in this truck's life it was painted red. But that red paint has faded and oxidized to the point that it is now pink. That will not be on there long!!!

I removed the top..its pending for sale in the classifieds. This thing will become a pavement pounding run around and a college football tailgating truck for the most part. However, living and playing in S. Louisiana, I'm sure it will see some mud as well. Not to mention, I would have to drive all over God's creation to find a rock big enough to think about crawling over. Ha Ha Ha.

Here are a few pics of the project vehicle before I started anything.

Welcome from Washington State......Looks like a pretty solid truck to start with. It's always nice to see another 70 model, I'm a little partial to that year cause I've got one! Good luck on the build and keep us posted!

You got a heck of a deal on that - free can't be beat. Is it really as rust free as it appears?

The body is oddly rust free. It has been in Lubbock, TX almost its whole life before coming down here to Louisiana. My wife grew up there so I know its pretty dry. There is some rust in the driver and passenger side floor boards, the bottom of the tailgate, and on the top of the windshield frame but that is really it. There is no rust on any of the body panels and no rust in the bed portion oddly enough.

This weekend I cut out the floor panel out of the driver side, POR-15'd the area in, under and around the rust/rot, and tack welded in some 16g steel to patch. I will finish those welds and clean it all up this week. I can start on the passenger side next week.

I also ground out the rust in the tailgate area. The tailgate will be a pretty easy fix since the rust is rather minor back there.

The real issue will be the windshield frame. Its pretty rotten up top. I am looking for a scrap frame now to make that repair. Otherwise I will have to grind out the bad portions, treat and fill. Going the cosmetic route is more of an option with my rig than most since I will not be putting a top back on it and it will not have to function structurally.

I'll post some pics of my progress later today.
 
Great deal and welcome. The single piece of advice I can give from your pics is; Dont cut the dash to put in some POS kenwood stereo system.
 
No worries. Since I am going to turn this into a tailgating ride, I have plans for the sound system. None of which include cutting into that original dash. I'm with you, that doesn't make sense to me.

I've been thinking about sound systems myself - I'd love to hear what you have in mind.
 
Too keep that look I'm going for, I"m thinking of going with a retro look stereo with modern inputs for mp3, Sirius and cd changer controls in the original dash mount. I am thinking about mounting the amp under the driver seat with kick panel speaker mounts, flush mount tweeters on the door frame above the door panel and larger 3 way's in the new rear panels in front of and behind the rear seat. The only thing i am not sure of is where to put the sub woofer. I guess a tube or box behind the seat or mounting it on one of the rear wheel wells.

I'm also installing a two battery system with isolator and a large inverter behind the rear panel on the passenger side with two A.C. plugs and two 12v power port plugs in waterproof housing to run accessories like blenders, tv, etc...

What do you have planned?

Sounds nice! I don't want to vary too much from stock as this point since I'm considering a full restoration at some point (but that seems less likely each passing year).

What I would like to do is just keep the original (non-functional) AM radio where it is and hide the "real" stereo - I was thinking of building a bracket for the head unit that would sit below the dash and rotate or cantilever up and behind it when not in use. For speakers, probably kick-panels as well in the front and maybe some kind of built-in boxes just behind the seats on the side forward of the rear wheel wells.

Still all up in the air though.
 
Retro Sound One is a model stereo that gives you that stock look but provides modern features. If you want to put a non-functional original unit in you can hide mount the Retro Sound One and control it with the optional 94" IR cable that you can mount anywhere to pick up the remote signal.

I also toyed with that option of mounting it in the glove box or in the console to keep it out of sight.

My project is a bit of a moving target as well so I know what you mean about it being up in the air.
 
I had to stop and talk to one of my skydiving team sponsors today about a demo jump into a football game we have scheduled for opening day. They are an inflatable fun jump and custom vehicle wrap company.

He had offered to wrap my K5 with my team logo etc.. for free until I can afford to get that awful pink paint redone. That's a ways off, but I may just take him up on it =- haha.

Since you're in bayou land and plan to mud it some, you're gonna need a lift of some sort. I have some 8" springs I'm trying to unload if you're interested. If you can even think that far in advance.
 
I'm not quite there as far as long term planning but I will certainly keep it in mind. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.
 
Bringing project and thread back to life

Well after a winter filled with hectic work schedule, job change for both me and my wife and hunting season I'm finally back at my project to get this pink blazer back on the road.

I sold my top, pocketed the cash to purchase some items I needed for the project and have made some progress.

I (i) cut out and welded in new floorboards, (ii) stripped the interior and ground the tub to the metal from the tailgate to the firewall, (iii) removed the heater to make room in the engine compartment for a dual battery system, (iv) stripped, repaired and restored the console, and (v) reparied the rust on the tailgate. Now i'm ready to do final prep and spray in a bed liner etc..

This weekend i'll get some new pics up and start into the repair of the windshield frame.
