Hey y'all. I have a 1985 K5 with a crated 350 that was put in right at a year ago. My dad and my cousin (that can work on chevy's with his eyes closed) put it in while I was in Afghanistan. Anyways, A couple of times as I'm driving, the engine will just quit and then it won't start again for about 15-20 mins. It's getting fuel because I can smell it after it gets flooded from trying to start it. Now, I've tried all Labor Day weekend to start it and it won't start at all. It's getting fuel and am just wondering if any of y'all have any suggestions for me. I'm about to take the distributor cap off and look under there and see if it's alright. Other than that I need some help trying to figure it out.
Thanks in advance.

I had one do this before to me it ended up being the module(sp?) in the distributor. When it heats up it will stop working. Could also be your coil getting to hot. I am sure more people will chime in soon and give you other advice.

First verify you are getting fuel into the engine, smell just not enough, need sight verification. then verify you are getting spark. pull a plug wire insert a small screwdriver into it have a friend crank the engine.
if no spark first off pull dizzy cap, check for any obviuos problems, if not go buy ignition module, and install try to start with new module in place, will more than likely fire right up.

I understand it it's hot it'll quit working. It's been sitting in the driveway since friday afternoon. I tried to start it on sunday night, monday, and first thing this morning and it just cranks and cranks and cranks. I'll go check the distributor now. Thanks.

OK, so I'm not a real mechanic, although I did sleep at a holiday inn express last night....J/K....
I have the ignition module out. Is there anyway that I can look at it and see if it's good or bad or do I need to take up to a parts store or just say to hell with it and just get a new one?

I've heard that some parts stores can check them, but when I needed to swap mine, Pep Boys was the only thing within WALKING distance, and they couldn't swap it. Just had to buy one. Call some stores first and see if they can test it.

I took it to advance auto parts and they tested it for me and the ignition module was good. I came back home and got the coil, took it up there and it was bad. I got a new coil, put it in and it started up on the first try.

Everyone that responded with advice...THANKS
