It's kind of tech ... why a stub shaft in the knuckle?

Assuming the spindle is intact, the hub should ride on the bearings, so why all the work to hold the stub shaft in? :dunno:

Maybe the inside one broke and they didn't want to tear down the outers? :thinking:

That looks like the inner shaft to me, look at the tire, maybe its full time 4x4 and neede to keep that shaft from spinning?
 
Without the stub axle there is no seal. Water, dirt, etc can get in thru the spindle bearing hole.
 
I just think the person should have at least used a US wrench instead of a Metric 17MM. :D

My blazer being an 89 and having some metric bolts on it i am pretty certain there isn't a single bolt that uses a 17mm wrench. The largest metric wrench i've needed was a 16mm for the belt tensioner.

The seal is really the only thing I could think of, but we have always just stuffed a rag in the axle tube. Though I guess if you had an open diff wedging the one side in like that would give you power to the other side (otherwise it's the same as 2wd)........just hope the wrench doesn't spin free as it could cause some serious havoc. I've seen a broken shaft or u-joint bind up in a knuckle and break the balljoints free several times.

Yeah that fockin' 18mm for the o-ring fittings on the steering gear box on my '88. :mad: The 16/18mm flare nut wrench is specialty and doesn't come in many sets nor is an 18mm open end included in most common sets. :angry1:
