to buy a bender.... I've designed the bumper, mocked it up, bought the plate type stuff I need for the winch/skid/etc... now I need to buy some tube and a bender...

I was gonna put this in the "tool shed" but it's not so much about the tool... Tho I would love all opinions on the differences and preferences between the JD2 and the Pro Tools too... definitely going manual... I need to buy 2 dies, thus keeping it "on the cheap".. figure it'll be pushing a grand...

Thus my question.....


I'm going to be running a combo of 2" and 1.75"... I'm just undecided on how thick I can go... for the 2" main tube, how much tougher will the .134 be than the .120 to bend? .134 is doable manual right?

and the 1.75'... is 1.88 doable without "hernia sticking out my stomach, alien style" effort?

I wont be doing any bends more than about 70 degrees...

down the road, absolutely, I'll wanna upgrade to a conversion.. But for now I just need to know how thick I can go with the manual.. I don't mind it being difficult with cheater pipes, etc for now...

I'm super pleased with the bumper design... And anxious to get some tube ordered before x-mas...

kinda thought I'd have some info after 60 views...
 
Ryoken, post up some diagrams or whatever you have. We'd love to seewhat you've got planned.

From what I've heard is that 2" .120 is a bitch but you get a good work out. I suppose if you have .134 you may have a blow out in your shorts or get a real long cheater bar. Can't wait to see pics as you always do top notch work.

What notcher are you looking at too?
 
I bought a Pro-Tools 105HD and i've yet to use it. I decided to go that way after i read the comparison on the OFN board. The JD2 dies will only work with the JD2 bender. The Pro-Tools bender will accept both the Pro-Tool and the JMR dies. Keith over at Xtremecrawlers is a Pro-Tools dealer and you will find your best deal there. hey thanks man... :D I've been holding off on an update till I could do a big one.. I do have a few things flying, parts bought, etc... maybe I'll do a TTT on the thread tonight.. :bow:

I'm ok with .120 on the 2", but I'd like to go as stout as I can on the 1.75"... the 2" work has the most severe bends, the 1.75's are nearly straight...

I'll probably just get the Pro Tools notcher...

No problems here. What i would do is, if you don't want to buy every die you may ever want or need then check around you who has what bender and what size dies and see if they're willing to let you borrow them when needed and then buy whatever bender other people have so you can accomplish the "borrow" feature. :thumb:

I myself, i like to just buy whatever i need or want then there is never a question if it's available to me. A man can never have too many tools. :D

looks like it'll be $900 or so shipped for the 105hd, handle, stop/degree wheel and 2 dies...

think I can make my own, better stand on the cheap.... nice to have a friend in the steel biz....

think I'm gonna just go with 2" x .120, and 1.75" x .188......
 
i cant wait to see some pics! you still gonna do some rock sliders to go with it?
 
I'm looking to do a fair-sized update on the weekend.. have something i wanna finish up this week...

I am doing an integrated 2 x 4 into a custom cab support system.... stout is an understatement...

But now that I'm buying a bender, I have really look at putting a cage in it next winter, and plan accordingly now with the floor/tunnel gig... really need to get some PRP's in so I can finalize that plan...

Ryoken or Paul, right? I have PRP seats in the Daily Driver Wide model along with a custom width rear bench seat. Absolutely love them. Not sure of your color scheme but since PRP is only about an hour from my home I went to their shop in Temecula, CA and spoke to the owner for quite awhile. At the time he had several sets of seats that were made for a specific customers needs and were excellent. The customer never came in and paid for them so PRP was offering to sell them to me for about 30-40% off retail. He said this happens occasionally. They were black seats which I really liked but had yellow piping which I didn't care for so I passed. When you call him ask if he has any seats that customers never picked up and that he is willing to sell cheap. Couldn't hurt. I also got my 3" belts from his too. Great guy to deal with.
 
yes, Paul... thanks man, thats good to know.... I was gonna do black vinyl backs, black velour center and orange vinyl outers.. but I'd be willing to go all black or something if the price is right.... definitely want the wide..

would love to have a good bender. i have a smaller harbor freight hydraulic roller bender but it doesnt work all that great thats what you get for $99 i guess?
 
I was wondering how your rig was progressing. Can't wat for updates---hint hint.
 
Both the 1.75" .188" wall and 2.0" .120" wall will be very challenging to bend with a manual bender, particularly the latter. In fact, I wonder if that bender is even rated to bend that tubing (I haven't looked it up or anything).

1.75" .120 DOM takes a LOT of effort to bend with a manual bender, even with a 6' cheater.
