It\'s Toast

I just had my rearend checked out, and I have 3 teeth broken off. The 3 teeth are in a row also, he said that is why I'm getting my thumping noise. So there isn't anyway I'm gonna repair the axle. I called the local salvage yard and they have a 14 FF with 4.10 for $450. This includes a 30 day waranty. It is off of a 1 ton truck. The guy who checked my blazer out said he could move the spring perches and shockmounts for me. He does a lot of hot rod work. Also I know a guy who said his cousin had a 1 ton truck with a 14 bolt dually. Would this possibly work? Or should I stick with the one from the salvage yard?

Re: It\'s Toast

Yeah, you don't want the 14bolt Dually...unless you want a dually K5.

$450 is a little steep for a 14bolt. I just sold my last 14bolt 3/4 ton version with 4.10 gears to Stoopalini for a lot less than half that. It has new breaks too. Including shipping, it went for $300.

I thought $450 was a little steep but I can't find anything better. Some people on this board have better but by the time you ship it, it will still run $450.

Re: It\'s Toast

You'll find a better deal.....the day after you buy this one for $450. At least that is the way it always works for me.

Man, that always, and I mean ALWAYS happens to me!! I always get something for a high price, thinking I won't find better, and next thing you know....Well, you get the picture.

Anyways, Mudfrog, sorry man, I wish I this happened to you 1 week earlier. (well, wish it never happened, but since it did)

But, I still have the thing in my garage, and haven't recieved the dough yet. If he decides not to take it, I'll let you know. Its cleaned down to bare metal too. (I spent hours cleaning it and then decided not to use it [sad]. Oh well. Good luck on your search though.

Thanks Ya'll,
And no... I won't find a better deal, because if I see a post or anything that says 14 bolt for sale, I'm not gonna read it
smile.gif
. This way as far as I'm concerned I got the best deal...lol.

Boss,
If he decides not to take it you know where to find me.

Re: It\'s Toast

Whats busted? just the ring gear? Is there some reason I am missing as to why you just can't put a new ring/pinion in it? You can buy the setup to rebuild a 10 bolt for $85, with instructions, and can probably get the gears for less than $200 right? I mean with your time probably not much, if any, savings, but at least you know YOU did the work. My opinions...

Re: It\'s Toast

Dyeager535,
Your right. I could just rebuild this one, but if it busted on me with 31" tires what whill happen when I go up to 35" or possibly even 38". It won't stand a chance, that is why I want to go ahead and swap in a 14 bolt.

Re: It\'s Toast

I apologize..I had assumed you already had a 14 bolt in there, and were just replacing it with another one...makes more sense now : ) BTW, they are right....two laws of working on trucks: 1) As soon as you buy a part, a better deal comes your way. 2) As soon as you throw a piece away thats been laying around for 5 years, that piece on your truck will break.

Re: It\'s Toast

Chaning the gears in a differental isn't lickty split. You have to tear all of the insides out and get an installation kit. The kit comes with all the shims and a marking compound. You have to take precise measurements very often during the installation process. Each gear is slighty different than another and that is the reason for all the shims because of the differences. You also have to mark the gears and give it a test spin when its completed to see how it is meshing. If it isnt right on the money you'll wear out your gears and be out alot of money.

Re: It\'s Toast

When I was originally looking at buying my Jimmy (it was dark, so I have an excuse
laugh.gif
) I went to take it for a test drive. I managed to move about 5 feet when a bunch of shrapnel went through the diff cover. Thats the only rear end I've ever killed, but at least it wasn't mine yet

I ended up waiting a week and a half to pick it up because they were getting the 12 bolt rebuilt for me. I thought I was getting a smokin' deal until I found out the ratio was 2.73:1
