I'm looking into getting another K5 Blazer, but its from another state and it's jacked up about 9 inches. Does anyone know where I can find state laws on car mods? I know in some states there is nothing for jacking up a truck while others do not allow bumpers to exceed 3 inches above the stock height. Anyone know where I can find the Illinois state law on this?

try a search on google.

I think it's the same as missouri if I remember correctly. It's something like 36". Mine is about 5 inches over the legal height and most shops around here say "So you have 205/75/R15s right?" and I just say "Yep!", and they pass me. Some shops are anal and won't let you slide though...

I've never seen any cops around this area mess with anyone, and trust me, there are some huuuuge trucks driving around here...

Here's Illinois' lift law:

You can't lift the body from the chassis more than 3 inches. In terms of bumper height, a 4,500-pound GVWR or less and your front bumper can't go higher than 24 inches, and the rear must be no more than 26 inches. GVWRs between 4,501 and 7,500 mean 27 inches at the front and 29 at the rear. Finally, if your truck is between 7,501 and 9,000, the allowable altering is 28 and 30 inches.

I got this from this website: http://www.therangerstation.com/resources/LiftLaws.html

I'm originally from Illinois about 4 hours south of Chicago and I learned that it depends on what town you are in as to how much the law is enforced. In my hometown when I was in high school our cops didn't bother you as long as it was an actual lift kit and not some home grown kit that looked or was unsafe.

Yep, it definitly depends on the town your in. There's a guy who lives nearby with a super duty on about 20"s of lift and 49" iroks. He was getting pulled over all the time so he had the local 4x4 shop remove the body lift and put 44s on it. plus they made some drop down tubes on the front and rear bumpers to bring it back to "legal" height. But most cops don't even know what the limits are. So as long as you're not driving a monster lifted truck I think you will be fine

I've wondered if you could get away with a removable or hinged drop bumper. Something you could swing up out of the way, or toss into the back. Anybody do this?

I knew a guy that built one that plugged into his reciever hitch in washington.
I plan on doing something like that for my truck. I dont plan on a rear bumper, just something that bolts in the reciever hitch and maybe with mudflaps attached to it

I know in georgia when I looked at the blue book years ago they had a lot of laws on it. 26in, i believe, to the frame. then it also says you can't raise/lower a vehicle 3in from stock, then a furthur catch all says any modifications from stock form can be deemed illegal. SO, basically if they want to get you, they can get ya. But, I've never had a cop say anything to me yet and I've seen ALOT of trucks bigger than mine
