I'm trying to replace the hydralic filter on my '75 2040. I got the long bottom bolt out of the housing, but how in the world do I get the housing to come off the tractor? I've tried tapping around the bottom with a rubber hammer, but it hasnt even budged. Is the housing itself threaded in there? Any tricks for getting this bad boy off? I think the filter is plugged, as it has probably NEVER been changed, and we sure don't want to buy a new $1500 hyrdraulic pump. So if anyone can help me figure out how to change this filter, that would be AWSOME

it should screw on there, the bolt on the bottom just keeps it from vibrating loose, good luck

Thanks for the heads up. I was kinda wondering that. So is there a special HUGE socket that fits on the bottom of the filter housing? I noticed it had some kinda raised ridges in a star shape on the bottom of the housing. I can take some pics if need be. There is certainly no way I can grip it tight enough with my hands to take it off.

my 2030 and 4630 filters do not screw on. it should be a canister type filter with a rubber O-ring between it and the housing. Good luck

Yes, it is a canister filter, I took the bolt off. I have the new filter and o ring to replace it with, but I just can't get the canister off. Were any of your canisters really stuck on there tightly?

No but they are serviced once a year. I would take a rubber hammer to it, but dont get to violent with it.

oil filters on a car are spin on type filters and are smaller.

No, it can't be destroyed. And I've tried a rubber hammer, pretty vigorously I might add. It looks to be cast from some pretty junky metal, so It wouldn't surprise me if it cracks, if I get too wild.. Any ideas to get this beast off would be great.. like I said, it may have NEVER been changed

miscommunication here the canister is aluminum. the filter is a replacable cartridge type inside the canister. If he destroyes the canister it probably cost over a hundred dollars new from john deere.

what he said......if its got green paint its $$$$$. Whats left of my fleet is all Deere.

Same here, I have seven john deere's. i farm with most of them and go to tractor pulls with the others.
