I didn't realize the Johnny Joint was going to require a special tool to assemble it. I tried using vicegrip c-clamps, but that didn't work. You can buy a tool for $100. :eek1: So I made my own tool.

I used short pieces of 1.5" DOM, 2" flat strap, (2) 9/16" washers, and a 5.5" long 9/16" bolt (&nut).

Here are a couple of pics:

The 1.5" DOM was almost too bit though. It took a bit of persuasion to get the snap ring in. It would be better with something that had an OD of about 1.375".

Hopefully this will help someone else installing Johnny Joints in the future.

Is that a radius arm you are building?

How cum its not yeller? :D

I was wondering what you were going to to for the flexable joint.
Looks good and the tool was a good idea.:waytogo:

Thanks! I'm trying not to overload the undercarriage with yellow. I decided the traction bar should be felt, not seen. :haha:

I will say I used tractor paint for the yellow and it stands up to the magchloride very well. The tan camo paint doesn't do so well, so I've started using a tractor paint primer under the tan camo paint. The black is engine enamel which I've heard does well against the magchloride also.

what kinda muffler is that??

everything else looks pretty good :thumb: not sayin your muffler doesnt i just haven't seen one i don't think

I have been looking for one of these write ups.
What's funny about that is your thread on Pirate is what brought to my attention that I needed a tool to assemble the JJ. :rotfl:

I figured the one that was linked in that thread was more complicated than necessary.

Nice Work! Good tool also.

Does that crossmember support anything or just to hook the traction bar to and connect the frame rails together? I would like to see more pics of how it is connected to the axle. Is this homebrew or a kit??

Yeah I rarely post here. But 1979Jimmy350 is sitting here in my garage , and ck5 came up. So here I am I want to start a new username for my website but it never gets approved by the mods. I dunno what the hell is going on really?

I was going to make my own axle connections, but I decided to use ORD's brackets to make things easy. Plus since ORD is so close everything comes next day so I was able to get them when I changed my mind at the last minute. :wink1: I made my own bar because I have moved the axle back 4", so I knew I couldn't use an off the shelf bar. The overall length ended up at just under 4'.

Right now the crossmember is only for the traction bar. I'm in the process of fabbing a skid plate that will be bolted to the tranny crossmember and this crossmember.

That's cool, I thought you might see it here. I don't post much on Pirate, but maybe I should post up pics in your thread over there too.
