im doin a serpentine conversion off a tbi on to my 81 k5. to use the alternator from the tbi motor do i just splice in the new plug?

or there is a short adapter made with weatherpac connectors, if you can see it here:

All you need as I recall is a resistor in one of the wires, and of course to splice in the later plug. I think it's in a few posts here, but the CS130/144 swap is covered all over the web. I just figured out on the '90/91 cluster there was an alternator idiot light.

I had a bad experience with the adapter plug, it wasn't made properly and made for some nasty problems when the plug lost contact. Luckily I was just starting to move when the alternator belt started slipping (and that's the ribbed style).

I just made my own by finding the right connectors and soldering in a resistor. Anytime you find adapters or connectors that are pure aftermarket parts you have to be suspicious of the crimps and materials, while the factory stuff usually lasts forever. The alternator idiot light is nice because a bulb makes a good excite line for the newer alternators. I'm actually using my choke light as an alternator feed since I couldn't figure out where the choke was on the TPI :-)

what resister should i use? got a part number? does it go between the battery and alternator or to the switched power? i know the brow wire goes to the light.

There are two different versions of the CS alternator and you will see the letters labeled on the connector are different. I think most of them are like this:

Any resistor of a few hundred ohms will work. It can dissipate more than 1/4W so use a larger one. There are some pre-made adapter part #'s listed here: http://www.powermasterperformance.co/item/Wiring_Harness_Adapters/380/c49. I found connector prices to be high and ended up searching eBay for alternator connectors for various 90's vehicles.

I'm running two of them and I ended up with both kinds. One charges the main battery directly and the other charges both through a battery isolator which requires a different kind of exciter wire, so my notes from that project may not be as helpful as a web search.

did the swap on an '86 pickup, it had gauges in the dash, I did some research and found which pin was the excite wire, spliced in to the factory TBI alternator plug, hooked it all up and it worked fine without the resistor.

I think the resistor thing is for people running "it's too late" lights.

so does the "P" wire that goes to a relay have to be used?if it does what does the relay go to? and i can just run a dummy light instead of the resister?

posting to remind me later, I need to address the same thing. Gunna post what I have later. Thanks guys

Why do you want a relay?

The setup shown with the resistor AND the light lets the alternator keep charging when the idiot light is burned out.
