ok so years ago.. 2006 I bought a fuse box from a 1989 olds 88. Well I rushed and cut wires short as the guy told me $10...
I got it out and went to the front. they looked at me and said.. $75. I laughed and said the yard guy said $10... so I threw $20 on the counter and walked out quickly saying.. well here ill go 20 but I'm out... they didn't stop me and I know it was a great price...
16 fuse, 8 relays...
ive posted it in the junkyard relays post I started..

relay_fuses.jpg

so I did have it in my truck and used a few circuits but not many. Now that I am getting ready to get a ton of stuff going, I decided to look into using it. Then I was like.. man wish I cut more wire out to have longer wires, etc...

so I went back to that junkyard today. I have been there 2 times in the last 3 weeks and they are new owners. Great people... so I showed them the pic as I know they have an olds 88 back there...

the cool thing with the olds.. its waterproof relays vs the newer car stuff...

the boss walks over and says... well that has fuses right.. I'm like yeah but on your price sheet it says relay $2-10.. so I need to know... this has 8 relays... how much would that be. then fuse box says $20..
he looks at me and says.. No that is a FUSE BOX... so $20.. I said. ill be back tomorrow (it was pouring and I had to get an mri in 2h!!!!)...

so guess I'm going tomorrow.. in addition I need a steering gear box ($30!!!)... hood release cable/lever ($7!!!!!) and other stuff... WOW..

so if you want to know what prices are like here.. check them out here. you will need to click the pic to be able to read it though...

does your junkyard have a price sheet? post it up if so!!!!!!!!!

Salvage yards here can be difficult to deal with often..
Your first mistake is to call it a "Junkyard"..many owners do not like that title, they prefer "Salvage Yard" or "Auto Parts Recycling Center"..

Some are the "pick & pull" variety that are very laid back and don't want a kings ransom for parts, and will let you return stuff for credit towards another part if the one you got didn't fit your needs--others are strictly "no one allowed in the yard" types and have a lot of things already pulled sitting on shelves,on a computerized inventory..

Those places are often where you'll pay a lot more--but you have a better chance at getting a good engine, etc, that hasn't sat outside for years before you saw it and want to buy it..but their prices are non-negotiable,it's pay what the tag says or get lost..

Around here prices vary a lot, mostly depending on if they know you,if your a regular customer or just a "once in a while" picker, and also the mood the guy behind the counter happens to be in...customer attitude also makes prices rise if you aren't happy with what they say they want for something..they don't like dickering most of the time..

Its all "junk" to them, they care not if your looking for a cheap fix..you don't want to pay what they want, they usually tell you to "just leave it over there ",at a heap of picked parts they will either sell to somebody else or just scrap it--you pulled it off,and supplied free labor,so they make out even better.
..some yards that still allow you to pull parts have a policy of "you remove it--you own it"--so you'd better be sure the price is agreed upon before taking anything off..

I've been gouged that way before..saw a plow pump and control valve & joy stick I needed ,at a yard I had bought the same parts from not long before for another truck, they charged me $50 for everything..
I figured they would cut the same deal,or close to it this time, but when I lugged the parts a 1/4 mile to the counter, the guy says "$100....
I was a bit shocked, told him I had bought the same things a few months ago and he only charged me $50..
"Yeah, but those parts are getting harder to find now--you should have ASKED before you pulled them off (pointing at the "you pull it--you own it sign at the gate")..

I had bought stuff there for 20+ years and never got that treatment, but the son took over the business from the father, and he wanted top dollar ,and often sold things he knew were NFG just to get the money--then deal with an irate customer later,he'd usually only give them another part if he could get one--not a cash refund..(sign says NO CASH REFUNDS also)...the guy did take $65 for the parts, all I had on me at the time..
I still go there ,but mostly because they are one of the few yards with any older vehicles left to pick on and it is close by..but I now ASK first !..:doah:..

Look at the category list closely and see if what you're looking for could fit into more than one category. Once I pulled a steering gear which turned out to be a "gear box" and not a "steering box", or something like that so it cost like $75 instead of $40, but at least the sunburn was free.

Here in Las Vegas, if something that has any kind of demand comes into a junk yard or impound lot, the owner keeps it for himself before any one else can get to it. I have seen a few 1-Ton 4X4 GM square bodies in impound lots and junk yards over the years, and when I asked about them the employees always said that it was not for sale, and that the owner wanted to keep it for himself.

Yeah that happens here often too--they do hoard the "good stuff" for themselves or family & friends..and it seems they usually are the lucky bastards who get a decent truck for scrap price, usually someone's "grandpa's truck" they inherited and just wanted gone...
I never get lucky enough to stumble across those deals..some folks are dumb, they dont even try selling a vehicle, they call the salvage yard and say "how much can I get for this--we want it out of the yard".

One yard owner locally has a "fleet" of 1965-74 Mustangs people junked years ago stashed in a huge metal building..another has all kinds of Ford pickups ,both 2wd and 4x4's Super Duty's,that are "not for sale"..another has at least a half dozen Chevelle's of various vintages and a few GTO's...
