i jus put a new yoke on my rear14bltff. i used a impact gun and didnt replace the crush sleeve. should i take it apart and replace the sleeve? i jus had the rear end rebuilt but the guys who rebuilt it put my worn out yoke on it....it seems find when driving but when ny rear end seized last time it was because my buddy who did the gears didnt set up the pinion right and the bearing wentt into the gears.....my truck will be seeing some freeway time. but the yoke seems like theres no movement....u guys think i should replace the crush sleeve and reset the pinion? or will it be good since the rear end was jus rebuilt abd had hardly had any miles on it.when i used the pmpact i turned the power/torque down on it...

You'll need to take it apart and replace the used crush sleeve with a new one. It's fine to use an impact to get the new crush sleeve to begin to crush, but after that it should hand tools until you get the correct amount of crush.

so when u replace the crush sleeve u wana make sure that the pinion jus spins free and doesnt have any play? and the crush sleeve doesnt change the backlash? you guys think if i jus took out the pinion support and took it to a shop to have them help me do it? in stead of takin the whole truck to a shop?

the back lash will not change on the setup . thats basicly done with the carrier adjustment.

the crush sleave keeps the preload on the bearings and dosnt let them go slack and chew up the gears with pinion movement.

good reads here on 14 bolt stuff.

great info there. but watch posting in the forums. = major d!cks at times on stupid easy questions asked.

should iget a new pinion nut? do i have to use a press to get bearing or sleeve in?

The press is handy to have but you can get it apart without.

I always use a new pinion nut, with red locktite.

For proper gear setup a new crush sleeve must be used

could i set the preload after i bolt pinion housing back onto the main houseing?

Nope, the pinion bearing preload should be done while the pinion carrier is out of the axle housing, or at the least...not turning a ring gear.

this doesnt seem to bad, i just read that the pinion nut pinion nut is initially torqued to 300-325 ft/lbs? i thought it was only suppose to be 5-15 in/lbs...but thats what it should take with used bearings to begin to rotate it? and rotate it meaning what it takes to keep it spinnning and not what it takes to make it START spinning correct?

To be 100% correct you should theoretically change the crush sleeve when replacing the yoke. However, both myself and several other people I know have successfully removed and replaced yokes without changing the crush sleeve. The key is to not over torque the sleeve and thus crush it more (which in turn increases the bearing preload), which is actually pretty hard to do considering how much torque is required to crush a 14FF version. Even many factory service manuals have procedures for replacing yokes without having to replace the sleeve.

Just check the preload (rotational force) on the pinion and see if it is still within spec. You need to either pull the pinion support or remove the carrier so the pinion does not have force applied to it by the ring gear.

Personally, I prefer to have the pinion support bolted to the housing (carrier removed) when torquing down the crush sleeve vs. trying to hold the pinion support in a vice or something.
