here's some pics of what i did. this is a Van 14FF i went a 1/4" into the housing. after plating the housing i gained about 1 1/2" of clearance. it's not that much extra but hey it was free:D

then the housing was plated with 1/2" and was stick welded with a stick just for cast iron, we preheated the area and wrapped it with welding blankets the allow it to coll slower.

and the cover i used a diff ring made by cyberfire a vendor here. the diff ring is made specific for shaved housings so it left a lot of extra material at the bottom so i could trim the ring to fit the profile of the shaved housing.

SCHWING !!!!

Now make some 5.86 gears and sell them to the rest of us....THAT would make you the man.

Great job, the cover is very nice:pimp1:

Nice job. that is friggin sweet. Makes me want to tear mine out and do the same thing. Maybe at another date I will. Very nice work.

Now that ya know how to do it, wanna make me one?? I've got a 14b in the garage that could benefit!

How much clearance between the ring gear and the housing? Do you have to turn down the O.D. of the ring gear? If not, why didn't you do that to get even more from the shave?

yeh shoulda done that but it was just a lil more than i could get done. most of this was done as a favor to me. but i got about 1/8" clearance on the ring gear

I missed this as well. No ring gear grinding? Thinking about shaving up the 14 bolt a bit. Need to find a shop to grind the ring gear down a bit though.
