Just check backlash?

So I pulled apart a 14BFF to put in a Detroit and one of the carrier bearings is smoked. I'm putting new bearings on both sides. I did not remove the pinion housing from the case.

I assume I need to reset backlash since the bearings will have been replaced. That should be all, right (i.e.: pinion depth shouldn't need messing with)?

I screwed up and failed to measure the backlash before I pulled the carrier, so should I just set it at .008" and look for a decent paint pattern?

That will work fine. .008 will be close enough. You shouldn't even need to pattern it up. Spin the pinion without the carrier in there, though and make sure you don't have a pinion bearing problem as a result of the other bearing going out.

Thanks.

The pinion spins smooth, but I'll prolly pull the pinion housing anyway to check it out and just keep whatever shim was in there.
