Dont know about EGR but cats will get plugged and the catalyst will fail to do its thing. Once that happens emissions go to **** and you need to put a new cat in.

check egr system.

x2

the EGR plays a large role in reduction of nitrous oxides (NO and NO2). the valve should have holes big enough to stick your fingers in and move the diaphram. if it gives a lot of resistance, the valve is shot. probably gunked up with carbon and stuff from the exhaust.

and yep, cats defnitely go bad. it almost always indicates a problem with the engine, though. you need to fix that problem before getting a new cat, or you'll just clog/melt/coat your catalist again. being a 91, yours is most likely monolithic. they're better than the old pellet style like my 82 k5 used to have in pretty much every way.

this is an egr valve, it bolts to the intake, If you put vacuum on the port, the engine should stumble. It is very common for the passages in the intake to get plugged, you might have to remove it and clean them, or worst case, you might have to remove the intake to clean them.

EGRs work only under "cruise mode" another easy way to check which was posted above is find the hole big enough to stick your finger in and when your truck is ideling push the valve up if your truck wants to stall out your EGR system fine but if it acts the same either way you have a problem with the EGR and/or the passages for it. once your cats get plugged up they can mess with nox too but get everything checked out and fixed first then get the cats done (I know its all been said before but its true)

wow sucks you failed...

I only get my truck inspected with a can that I MUST use and no thinking twice about it.....

Guaranteed to pass... buy it at autozone... it passed me while my carb was flooding the secondaries.. my secondaries were just oozing gas down in at idle and I passed.. also failed the first time and passed the second without changing anything!!!!!

$7 but worth it...

also looks like this..

Whats this stuff do?

if its what Im thinking you dump the stuff in your gas tank then run the tank low refill then go to smog station and it somehow allows you to pass how it works I have no idea but I've heard of stuff like that before. if you dump it in and go to the station with the stuff in the tank you won't pass you have to cycle it through the system

my friend's old camaro had problems passing, so he used that stuff (we just call it G2P). it helped a lot, but that engine's rings were so screwed that it was beyond hope. but, the company honored their guarantee and gave him a 100% refund on the product, so it's worth a try.

OR, you could just do what i did. my k5 was high on CO (hey, that's why i was having headaches after wheeling) and i just bought some e85 to mix in. i used 2 gallons of gas (10% ethanol) for every gallon of e85. i passed that test so easily the inspectors were totally baffled. they kept asking what i'd changed in the last week. of course, i didn't tell them nothing illegal about it, but it was just funnier that way. :haha:

close... you fillup your tank... then go drive around for 3/4 of a tank... then go inspect.. no refill before re-inspect...

I love it and will use it EVERY TIME WITHOUT THINKING TWICE!!!! just that added assurance...

I just killed NJ emissions...

My NOX number was like 475... The others where just as good...

run some "gauranteed to pass", chit works...
