A 84 GMC suburban to be exact. And not just any old suburban a DIESEL 6.2 3/4 ton :pimp:. Goals for it are to be a tow rig in the longterm and DD with better fuel economy in the short-term. im gettin 4-6mpg with my wore out 6.6 carbed so the 15-20mpg will be more than welcomed. Oh yeah and did i mention its only 1000 bucks and its got a custom heavy duty front bumper with a winch:whistle:. I put down 250/1000 and ill be back with 750 on the 9th to get the old girl home. I got a non-refundable deposit receipt written up so everythings all legit and they are real honest like folk out in the country with a big ol mansion of a house so i dont foresee myself gettin ****ed over but we'll see. No body damage except for a partly rusted out hole in the back on rear left roof pillar up top which can be filled with bondo :dunno:. She sounds like a monster and smokes almost nothin startin up cold. Engine idles rough but stable when cold but hell what doesnt. Anyways heres the ad as i dont got any pics of my own yet since i forgot the camera:doah:.

sweet...

I'll be stepping up to a diesel sub in the next year or two. Hope I can find one that nice...:whistle:

Thanks man,look for a build thread on this soon :whistle:. This ones not ever gonna be a wheeler so im gonna finally get to have a rig that i can build for comfort and towing capability. Im thinkin ill go ghetto and set up a flatscreen in the back with some outlets for a heater/laptop charger/cell phone charger etc...,a few cheapy subs since the last 2 i had were way too much boom for me. Build some tool boxes into the sides, throw a Paint job on it. Replace valvecover/oil pan gasket seals as shes a little leaky and just do whatever it takes to keep er running but for the most part enjoy it as the great old rig it is.

Congrats!..Looks a lot like my '85 K-10 diesel Burb I picked up about a year ago,that I'm finally starting to play with...mine is fairly rust free for a new england truck,because it came from Washington state originally,then went to Vermont for a few years before the guy I got it from bought it..I need to repair the inner wheel wells on all 4 corners,the paint is ugly thanks to peeling clear coat,but the rockers,floors and doors are in real decent shape,someone oiled the floors often and douched the undersides with tons of undercoating from day 1 by the looks of it..doorts have some pitted rusted spots I might have to fix around the door handles,but it's a lot more solid than my '82 K2500 is now,and might end up replacing it some day..

I am looking forward to the pictures of yours once you get it..that rubber cargo liner sounds interesting...like the winch bumper and it looks like a nice truck,rust free and probably runs as good as it looks...dont fret over the diesel not idling smooth,neither of mine do,and I haven't seen one that does yet,they all sound "lopey" at idle...

Yeah these old burbs are badass for sure. With it i can hold 4 people and still have all the room i have in my old k5 with the rear seats out. The tinted rear windows are really cool imo because its kinda nice to have some privacy while your sleeping in the back out on the trails. Only thing im worried about is she said she averaged 14mpg towing the 2 horse trailer and all her riding gear. She was probably driving too fast (over 60-65) since im pretty sure its got a th400 and diesels dont rev up well. Im gonna put some in tank injector cleaner in it and keep it slow and steady and see what kinda mileage i get. They said they didnt know if the winch worked or not but it had some good 3/8's steel braided cable on it that looked like it was at least a 8k winch. So its something to play with when i get home.

14MPG towing with that set up doesn't sound far off. looks like you scored a nice rig for $1000. Don't just bondo over the rust hole - fix it properly. It would be a shame to not do it right the first time on a truck that nice.

I'll second Colby, 14 mpg towing a two horse trailer with a 6.2 sounds about right. Diesels don't generally rev up to higher rpms, but the 6.2 goes to 3600 rpm before it hits the governor.

You will probably never see 20 mpg with that rig/combo, but it should see 15-17 everywhere and be damn reliable doing it.

:haha::haha::haha:

A couple of tanks with a heavy ratio of Diesel Kleen helped mine out quite a bit. I've heard Marvs Mystery Oil is good for IPs, too.

I dont have or have access to a mig welder or something to do sheetmetal with. All i got is an old lincoln 225 arc welder my grandpa lets me use so we'll see :dunno:.

Exactly what im lookin for :waytogo:. Its already had the headgasket replaced and they claim its only at 206k miles. However it was 10 years ago so it looks like this headgaskets holdin up good. my 76 k5 is pullin 4-6 and my 73 k5 will pull 12 at best. So believe it or not this is pretty damn fuel efficient by my standards :haha:.

Yeah i scratched my head a little when i saw that too but maybe he was comparing it to a semi?:dunno::haha:Ill have to grab up some of that stuff. Im definitley looking for some good in tank additives to hopefully clean up this old girls act. And im going to change all the fluids except maybe the TC.

There's a good bunch of guys on CK5 in the Bay Area who would likely help you out with that. :wink1:

Veryyy true. Scott just helped me out with a torque converter for my 73 yesterday. Although he informed me he doesnt intend to stop bein lazy until next summer :haha:. I think dean mentioned he had a little mig so maybe ill hit him up when its time and see if he cant help patch a spot for me. I can bring beer :thumb:

if nothing else, you could cut out the rust and then cut up some patch panels out of some similar steel and take it down to a welder and have them tack those patches in. Then you could finish grind, bondo and paint it.
