Just offered a 6.2! Help Diesel Guys!

I may be about to do a TBI -> 6.2L swap in an 89 K5 myself, if it goes that way we could work on things at the same time and share ideas on how to solve various roadblocks.

The only time you'll need anything more than just basic hand tools (screwdrivers, nut drivers and wrenches) is an engine hoist to drop the engine itself into the truck. I might cheat a bit and use some heavy equipment to lift the tub off to do the swap, but that isn't an option for everyone, haha

i am seriously debating this swap also(there was a 6.2 with everything included for 400 and i missed it:doah:) but everything i read says its a direct bolt-in. i havent searched much but all the wiring and everything will be fine i assume?

Yep, I had to drill a hole in my firewall for the grommet that the 6.2L specific wiring harness uses, but I was able to un-plug my old gasoline engine's wiring harness, and plug the 6.2L harness straight in without having to re-pin anything. The firewall grommet runs the wires that the diesel idiot lights use, and also to run power / ground for some of the engine stuff. They just plug into the fuse block / ground terminals on the e-brake bracket.

Bolting the engine in was a breeze, no tougher than putting a 350 in. I have manual transmissions, so that was never a concern as far as govenors etc go. The cooling system took some creativity since my truck is an 80 and never had the diesel from the factory. The factory diesel trucks have a different core support than the gasoline engines which allows the much wider diesel radiators to just bolt in.

Of course, I did have to install a hydroboost brake unit, and since I turbocharged mine right off the get go, I had to have custom exhaust made up as well.

well...i just found two 6.2 on CL for 500. for both! one is for parts it says. geez where is the money when you really need it:doah:
sorry done hijacking!

I'm with ya buddy! I think I may just try to talk my buddy into using his body shop to do tge work since I can't at home but I can do the rest if it's as easy as the guys are saying. Things like the wiring harness just hooking right up! One thing I need help with to start guys is what exactly am I going to need off the donor truck? I may have to get the parts and throw them in storage for a bit if my buddy's shop is too busy for me to borrow a corner. So what would I need to take off the donor and store along with the 6.2? Here's what I can guess on needing from the donor suburban off the top of my head:
1. wiring harness
2. engine of course!
3. all accesories (alternator, power steering..) everything attached to the front of the ebgine right?
4. gas tank?
5. radiator
6. engine controller/cpu? Is there one for an '86 6.2?
7. fuel lines?
8. anything else? I dunno guys help me out!

Oh also for anyone that's interested a guy at a wrecking yard near by has a front end D60 out of an '86 Chevy P/U for sale with 4.10 gears. $1500. Sorry off subject there real quick but hey!:D

I gotta run to class, but I'll post up everything I can think of that you'll need to do the swap later on this afternoon ;)
