Hello All,

So I've never owned a diesel just gassers but have been interested in giving them a try for a while now. I have a friend who has an '86 burbo that was rolled. It had a strong running 6.2 n/a in it. It's mine with anything else I would need out of the truck to convert my '89 K5 from it's current 350/tbi. First do you diesel folks think it would be worth the time and trouble to do the conversion? Like I said anything I need parts wise is mine for $300. I have 35" tires, 700r4, and 3.73's. Do you see this as a problematic set up for the 6.2? Would the gears need changing? Is this motor a total dog? What if I turbo charged it eventually? What kind of mileage could I possibly get out of this set up if I try to get a little more power out of it or just as is (maybe turbo or whatever to get it up to the gassers hp/torque neighborhood)? Thanks guys for any help!

Well, *I* thought it was worth the time and trouble, and now that it is done I am a happy camper, but YMMV. Your gears are OK - 4.10's would be better, and 4.56's would run real good at the slight expense of some fuel mileage. Will the motor be a total dog? Well, I can't really say... it is probably a 130HP "C" code motor, which weren't exactly rockets. Gearing helps though. I have a 165HP "J" code motor, and it runs pretty darn good. I have a 700, 4.56's, and 37's, and I have no problem merging onto the freeway and such. With a turbo Banks claimed 208HP and something around 375-400lb-ft torque. Those numbers are similar to the TBI 454 used during the same era, but with twice (or more) mileage.

Too bad it's wrecked, or you could simply drive it and see if the power was adequate for you... :(

Thanks MaxPF. Hey I've decided to go ahead and do it. My next problem though is that I live in a high rise by Chase Field and have never done anything with a diesel. Any ideas of a good tech or shop that could work with me on this project? I have a buddy of mine who owns a body shop but he's up to his eyeballs in work right now and the Blazer is my DD. So I'm gonna need to find a reputable shop to do the conversion I think. Any ideas?

Only that a shop is gonna rape you for the conversion. I'd see if your buddy with the body shop has space for you to work on it and do the conversion yourself. It isn't really any harder than swapping to another gasser. The hardest part for you is going to be sorting out the electrical stuff, but even that is easy. Read my heart transplant thread - that will give you an idea of what you need to do.

Yeah that's actually what I came up with LOL. Gonna see if he can squeeze me into the corner somewhere. So thanks for the info. I'm glad you just did the conversion. Your thread should be invaluable!
