Hey guys ive got an 85 k5 with the 305. ive been having a problem when i turn the key off. it still turns over a few times, but isnt running. im wondering if this is due to a leaky carb allowing fuel to drip down onto hot spots on the cylinders. any suggestions that may help make this stop? also should prolly mention that it has an edelbrock carb and upper intake.

When you say "isn't running", how do you mean? Sounds like what's called "dieseling", which is often indicative of the timing being off or the motor running hot.

i mean its turning over, but the key is off, all acc are off, it just spits and sputters for a few seconds then finally dies. it starts a little rough, but once it warms up it runs just fine.

Sounds like dieseling. (This is so called because diesels are famous for running on when turned off due to the way they run as opposed to gas motors.)

ANYWAY, get you a Chilton's or Hayne's or whatever service manual, if you don't have one, and a timing light, check the timing, start there.

"Running on" is either idle speed too fast, or not enough timing at idle, or both. Retarded initial timing puts the throttle plates open further, and makes it easier for the engine to want to "run on" after shut down.

It has a higher idle for sure. So I'm gonna check the timing, and try to adjust the idle down a little. Gonna have to get a time light though.

being an automatic, will that hurt anything in the tranny? and if that works thats great for now, but i want to fix it right. plan on makin the lil 305 into a powerhouse

It won't hurt anything, but as you mentioned, it's not actually fixing anything. Forget using the 305 for a builder. 350's are just too damn cheap to waste money on a 305 and that is just what it is, wasting. Better yet, swap in an LS engine.

Don't waste your time and more importantly money on a 305.

Shut it off in gear.....

lol, back in the day I had an old monte carlo that did this. nothing like going into 7-11 buying a drink and coming out to your car still "running". :haha:

shut it off in gear for a couple months until I got off my lazy ass and fixed it.

i feel you guys on bigger is better, but i really feel like the only way ill swap motors is if my cylinders are pitted up(they may be ive got low oil pressure and very little but still noticeable burning of oils). in which case i would prolly try to find an old ls1 ;-)

and yours got to the point it stayed on that long?? mine lasts a few turns. sometimes more but never where its actually running

Smartass. I used to carry a 2x4 to whack the starter solenoid when it stuck ... so you carry a piece of plywood to stop up the air intake when it won't shut off? :haha:

No I dont it only runs for like 5 seconds after i turn it off.

oh yeah, it can get bad enough that it will never shut off... it can be really embarrassing seeing it just keep coughing and sputtering without end.

yea its no good. im sure it builds up on the valves and **** over time too. need to pass emissions as well. it passed for the previous owner this last sept. i feel like there is no reason why it wouldnt pass now.
