IIRC ( at least for the few that I saw in person ) the ladder was hinged at the top and swung out/upwards supported by a simple rod - it was not user friendly !
And the top did not support much weight, especially in the center.
Lots of accessory ideas and products were advertised but not all were good ideas or very functional - but, a very few were great.
