I'm looking to move my spare tire to the rear bumper area. Do you guys have any pics of this kind of setup? I'd like to keep my stock rear bumper if possible, but I'm having a hard time coming up with a design I like. I'm an amateur welder/fabricator, and I have no doubt I can build whatever I decide on. I just need some design help from you fine folks. Any ideas?

Build/make a tiregate (as seen in the tech articles on this forum)
I've been contemplating something removable for when I need the space in the bed.
I'm thinking of a stinger (hitch) mounted piece that either folds to the side using a trailer tongue jack swivel, or one that tilts back (away from tailgate) and slides under the truck a bit, so that access to the tailgate is unencumbered.
Problem with the large tires is that even dropped all the way to the ground, the tailgate still won't clear them, and that's just with 33's.
I really like the hitch mount style that pivots out to the side, but I believe those are around $500.
Don't have a 100% solution yet, I just know I don't want to have to step over the tire to access the tailgate, I don't want it blocking the rear window, and I don't want to change departure angle.

I dont have any of those problems you describe with my swing out tire carrier. With a custom bumper, you gain departure angle and with a 33" tire off set on the carrier, your not blocking the rear window hardly at all.
Yes, but if fabbing something up for temporary use, a swingout seems quite a bit more complex and large than necessary.
I've got a few exterior tire mounts for the K5's that I was eventually going to put on the truck, but I'm not sure I want to have the tire outside all the time.
Lowest point in the rear of my truck is the trailer hitch, as long as something doesn't stick too far out of it, departure angle won't be affected. I just mentioned the stinger idea as the OP said he wants to keep his original bumper if possible. Entirely possible to do with a swing out mount as well.

The suburban has the tire recessed into the floor. Could this be grafted in for the k5?

Not behind the rear seat, unless you want to move the gas tank.
I believe they won't fit a 33 very well anyways, 31" being the largest diameter used stock. Even the stock bed mount carrier for the K5 is REAL tight with a 33".

Check out the Izusu build by stormis in the Driveway build threads. He has on that rocks and tells you where to get the parts. I think its in his first 5 or so pages.
