K5 build sheet location

assembly line build sheets may be on top of the gas tank, under the seat, under the carpet, or even stuffed behind a trim panel. This was usually something that was glued to the vehicle so workers could identify the options being installed or it was attached to the floorpan or other interior surface for the same reason.

Mine was glued to the rear of the left rear wheel house under the carpet. Its in my glove box now and in surprisingly good condition.

I found the one for my '81 G-10 van inside the front portion of the unibody frame rail one day, while doing an oil change, back around 2000!..I saw what looked like paper rolled up in a tube sticking out of a hole in it ,at first I thought (and prayed) it was MONEY someone stashed away in there, but after about 20 minutes of trying to carefully extract it in one peice ,I gave up,but was able to read enough of it to see it was the original "build sheet"...surprised it survived all those years and was still able to read it..much of it crumbled as I attempted to remove it though,unfortunately..(dont really matter,as the tranny is the only original drivetrain part left in it anyway!)..

I have found build sheets in pickups in between the seat springs, glued to the back wall of the cab,and on one truck it was on the top of the gas tank...my friend had an '82 C-10 that was a phone company truck--originally came with a 250 six,and a five speed manual, that looked like the ones GM used in Chevy Monza's!...a shortbed fleetside too...!

I looked under the k5s buckets but just found foam. Do I need to take off the seat covers? How do I find it between the seats?

If it were in the seats it would be looking right at you from the back side, between the springs and the foam..I've seen a lot of trucks that never had a build sheet,or they were put somewhere like on the gas tank,or some other part that may have been replaced,or a former owner found it and kept it,etc...

I think GM used to be able to look up a vehicle by the VIN number abnd be able to print out a copy of the origiuinal build sheet ,for a fee of course..not sure if they'll still do that or not...
