I wash thinking about painting my hard top. What prep and paint might I need to do and use ?

there was a thread about it not long ago. IIRC, some guys had a hard time dealing with the factory gelcoat paint, but someone used boat products with success. that's off the top of my head.

one guy sanded his smooth, then painted it and it looked pretty sweet.

I just sanded it and rattle bombed and it turned out nice. Mines flat black but with a little more time and effort then I put into it you could make it nice with gloss and clear coat spray paint

i sanded mine down smooth before rattle canning it camo and had no issues...

Just wear eye and air protection... it's fiberglass...

If i was you i'd talk to ryoken on here. He might even be able link you to a thread. He knows all about that. I need to paint mine also

Hard top

You can see what mine turned out looking like but I sanded it and cleaned the surface, Primed it, and painted it with Urethane Base Coat/Clear Coat and it turned out nice..

Izzy's is the one I was talking about. Looks good. If mine was my dd or a cruiser/show truck, I'd put in the time and effort to do that, too. My top spends more time on the garage floor than on the K5, though.

I was considering doing mine in Herculiner. Had some left over from doing my tub, and thought about using it up this spring on my top. Anyone tried this?

Top isn't heavy enough already??? hahaha It's not a bad idea though

I did it to mine but the PO had re-painted it when I bought it. Just sanded it down with 220 and wiped it down with acetone. No problems yet. No pics though when I did it. One peice of advice, use the UV protector, it looked like hell after a couple of months in the sun.

with the rough finish it had factory i rattle canned mine a few times. once i got my blazer painted red i sanded the top down smooth and had it painted at a shop same as the metal body. it has been about 16 years now and the body paint is in great shape but the top has faded, BUT i had my blazer parked for a number of years and it has not been buffed and waxed in probalby 10 years so that most likely contributed to the fading of the top.

i like that izzy.....i wonder since f26 sticks like superglue to everything...i wonder if u could run a bead of it in that seam and use a body filler paddle on it then sand it out smooth or does that seam serve a purpose in expansion and contraction?

Seams

I am no expert by any means and have talked to alot of buddies and the concensus is those seams are ment for twisting and such. DO NOT FILL!!! You know how a blazer when four wheeling twists back and fourth, well with the top on that twist has to go somewhere and those seams are where.. :eek1: Well at least thats what me and my buds believe..
