Hi guys,

Just bought a '91 Blazer last night. Arizona truck aside from the last two years here in Colorado, and owned by what seemed to be a rather conservative and mechanically inclined gal. Pretty stoked. Haven't had any GM V8 keys in my hand since my '76 Formula Firebird...

Anyhow, aside from lube issues, thankfully the rear power window goes up and down, AND seals at the top with a nice resounding thunk.

My super easy question is: should not the glass disappear below the top of the tail-gate? Currently it stops with ~1" protruding out at the highest point.

Thanks for any input, and appreciate all the knowledge I've already gained from this forum.

My glass in my 91 sticks up about 1/2" and my 90 sticks up about 1" at the center. I think it's fine... There is a spring loaded deal at the center of the bottom of the tailgate which catches the glass as it comes down, so I would bet your motor just isn't strong enough to overcome the spring, or maybe there is more to the spring assembly (I've never looked).

Congrats on the truck. As a new member you need to make 10 posts (I think) and then get some pictures up here, so get to work! :hack::weld::grind::)

I'd say that's pretty normal, I've never owned one that did go all the way down flush. Usually between 1/4" and 1" is the range.

Both that I've owned were the same way. Sticking out at least 1/4". I believe there's a type of bump stop in the bottom that keeps it from going too far.

Just be lucky that your rear window even works, around here it's a rare find to see one that does.

Damn, that was fast. Thanks guys.

Just seemed weird in that, why would you design something that you gotta be careful of hauling some 4x4's home from the lumber store, or what not, with the gate up. Guess that belongs in the "Things I wanna slap a GM engineer for" thread, or whatever it's called.

Oh yeah, I got some work to do. She runs super well, but we gotta lock down some leaks ASAP before she gets much further than the power-wash (to clean things up per aforementioned leaks)

Feelin' pretty positive though.

Cheers,

DP

nad,

I hear ya. The whole thing is remarkably working re. electrics. Just needs all panels pulled ASAP for mucho lubing. She's gonna sit for a bit until I can do so.

I've been shopping on and off for over a year. Finally pulled the trigger. Gonna be patient before she get's rolled out for full use.

Seeing as how the glass is straight up at the edge, it can support a fair amount of weight without breaking. I don't think you should even worry about it. Now if you drop something steel with a sharp corner, you might break it, but a pile of 2x4s laying flat will probably be fine, especially if they are angled because they will probably rest on the sheet metal of the gate anyway. Throw on a towel or two and problem solved.

I bet if you remove the access panel and clean the mechanism and re-lube it you can get it to go down further. I used WD-40 to wipe off the old grease (which had turned to glue in my truck), then wiped it down and covered it with white lithium grease. It works a lot quicker now and so it sort of "slams" down at the bottom which makes it close further.

You can remove the tailgate cover and adjust the window stop at the bottom of the tailgate. I've adjusted mine but it still sticks up a little (less than 1/4") but I think I ran out of adjustment. I might get back in there sometime to see if I can modify the stop to give me just a little bit more.

Ah, now it all makes sense! I replaced my cracked glass with a new one and my window doesn't go down near as far anymore. I've adjusted the side rail bolts a LOT but I will look for those stops.

The rail that the window is glued into was bent by the PO so every once in a while the window catches on the motor edge....very frustrating! I think I got the channels bent far enough now.....

Mine goes down all the way. You might need to adjust the stop.

It has always gone all the way down and that was one of the things I checked when I put it all back together after paint.:doah:

Mine sicks up about an Inch, havent tried to adjust the stops yet, but I have looked at it. Has anyone had problems with the glass or track catching a rough spot about half way up. Mine has always made a sound like the glass or the track is loose about half way up. It only does it on the up side, not coming down, and always in the same spot...

There are sevarel thing to check. It sounds like the tailgate is not lining up with top, so when the outer edge of the glass gets to the top rhat is when you hear (the rough spot) it pop in to the top.

I used these to make sure mine closed right http://www.classicparts.com/1981-87-Tailgate-Bumper-Set-Fleetside/productinfo/11-382/

Also check the trackes inside the tailgate, they are bad about the felt wear out and not be anything there to hold the glass tight.
Here they are http://www.classicparts.com/1973-91-Tailgate-Glass-Channel-Blazer-Left/productinfo/11-631/ http://www.classicparts.com/1973-91-Tailgate-Glass-Channel-Blazer-Right/productinfo/11-632/ Or you can do like I did and get sash for home windows and just glue new in.

You know it could be the felt, B/c the glass is loose (side to side and forward to back play) until it is snug into the top. When I took the cover off, the rollers on the track are tight, and I didn't realize there was suppose to be felt in the slide, b/c mine is only metal...... I will check into getting some for it. Thanks for for the help. :waytogo:

Mine was catching at about this same location too. The bottom, metal channel that holds the bottom of the glass was "bumping or catching" on the bottom edge of the motor. The 4 outside bolts (2 on each side of the tailgate) could be adjusted slightly to see if this helps. You would want to adjust those bolts (which attach to the window channels) outward slightly. See if that helps.

Also, take the back cover off and cycle the window a few times. That should show you exactly where it is catching. Have someone help so you can watch everything back there.

Ok thanks, I will do that this evening.
