Need some help with the rear window. Typically in the past I have had an issue where I had to press against the tailgate while turning the key in order to get the window to roll down. I would just press hard.. or jiggle the tailgate in a out while turning the key at the same time… this always eventually worked and the window would come down…..until today.

Now is wont work at all. The tricky thing is the window will roll up…. Always. Only have the issue with the window going down.
Doesn’t matter if I use the switch in the truck.. or the key in the back … same result. Up works .. down doesn’t.

I wanted to believe the issue was related to the ground. But if that was the case the window would NOT roll up as well ?? ( I would think)

So my next thing is the safety switch… this would explain why it worked in the past when pressing the tailgate inward….or jerking back and forth. BUT… all my research shows that the safety switch ONLY prevents the window from rolling up….. the safety switch doesn’t affect the window going down. Can anyone confirm? Or give me some ideas ?

Don't know for sure, never worked on one although I have heard about lots of problems.
There is only two ways for that system to work. Either there are two windings in the motor with a common ground, one up and one down, or the motor is isolated from ground and the voltage polarity is reversed for the different directions.

I don't think that I have a schematic that shows, but someone here should know.

Since I hear about ground troubles, I suspect it has two windings. If so, then one of them could be bad, or the "down" wire has come off.

I'm sure someone here who knows will chime in, and I will check my schematics, but you might try a search on rear window, or maybe rear window motor or switch to see if its already been answered...

Wow, if you do a search on rear window motor, be ready to do some reading.........I did find where is uses two hot wires and a case ground.

So, odds are its a bad motor or one of the two wires is not connected. Looks like you will have to get to it to be sure.

I'm going to bypass the safety switch and also install a new motor cable next week...

Just really want to see if anyone has heard of the safety switch preventing the window from going down .....due to the fact I that I would have to jiggle the tailgate.. that points to the switch as the issue.

My rear window was doing the exact same thing recently.
First thing I did was jump in the back and made this video:

Then, when I got the window down I opened the tailgate and with the cable disconnected from the motor I hit the switch and the motor worked fine. UP and DOWN.

I hooked the cable back up and it worked.

I noticed the motor was a little rusty in one corner and I know I will have to replace it soon.

Make sure the safety switch is nice and tight , could have loosened up with time, I used a drill to test the up and down motion of the window checking for any binding and last but not least checked for voltage at the wires right under the tailgate, it was the switch bad (rusted) connectors.

the drive cable in mine rusted solid inside the plastic sheath, replaced it and all was good after that

My window is up right now.. when I hit the switch UP inside the cab ( or the key outside) I can hear the motor engage… just won’t roll up because it’s already all the way up. However.. when I hit switch to go down… no sounds at all (either cab switch or key outside)

pull the rear panel and have somebody try to operate it while you watch with a flashlight, dont get your finger caught :) also take the cable off the motor and see if the motor goes both ways
