Ok well I'm in the process of wanting to pick one of these rigs... I love the '69-'72 style but those are just way to expensive. I have about a little over a $2.5k budget... yes I know that's not much to work with. I like the fact I believe up to '76??? that the tops could come off with ease. I would prefer not to do this with a cab. I can wrench on cars/trucks/suv's so picking up an older model is not a problem. Although I would be using this as my daily driver for now and like the idea of fuel injection starting in '88??? '89??? Would defintely eventually be making the rig to go out on some trails and crawl around and hopefully tackle some heavy/extreme stuff... but probably not so with the gerth and sheer size of these rigs. Sorry for the long post!

What are your opinions?

If you're in cali, you can easily pickup a 7379 that fits your budget.

I passed on a 73 for $800 just a year or two ago.

fule injection started in 87 and the easier to remove half tops are post 75. 75 and earlier had the full tops which are really heavy compared to the halfs. even when mild and fully built these rigs are IMO the best to tackle some pretty heavy terrain.

My personal recommendation is 87+ for TBI. I think 91 had galvanized panels, and have my favorite horozontal lighting, instead of the vertical. Might have switched from the 208 to the 241, but I dont recall. It also has the newest updated 700R4.

I'd personally look for a 6.2 diesel k5 in stick if I could. There was one in CA, with faded paint, no rust, being sold by a member a while ago... I think he was asking 2k for it.

Fuel costs can easily run amuck nowadays, so you have to decide whether spending an extra few hundred on a 6.2 diesel with the future avaliability of biodiesel or WVO, vs your situation. Either way, I think you should do nothing less than TBI, just for the extra 4mpg.

If you go with a 87+ year 3/4 you have a real solid platform to work with and not need to many mods. Or look for a short box to limit the wheelbase and/or a donor vehicle with good axles is a good option.

Yeah if you're going to daily it, definitely want 87+ for the TBI. The full tops are neat, but you'll probably have trouble finding a nice one in that price range. I bought my 87 for 2K and it was in overall good shap, rust here and there but other than that not bad.

I have seen an '87 and an '88 in the local Trade Express for your price range. Just have to look and find the right truck for you. I think you would be best off in the '87-'91 range for your needs. I have an '88 and it is a very dependable daily and has been in the 10 years I have owned it. Good luck and happy hunting!

it will take more work and I agree with the 87 and up assesment of most guys here but full toppers ( 73-75) rule

Here is a few that I mentioned in an earlier post.
