I know I probably asked this question before, but here goes again. I bought the rubber gasket that goes between the fiberglass roof and the K5 roof. I just never installed it. With the tons of rain we got the last two months I need to change it out. How much pain in the ass is this, what do I have to look out for?

it goes on just as easy as weather striping on ur doors. but get a tube of weatherstripping adhesive so when u replace it,it will stay in place when u go topless;)

Just make sure you do a real good prep, clean the hell out of it. Get all the trapped dirt and grim out. I would only use the silicone if you have a issue with it staying in place after you install.

Really simple to put on but check the body seams very carefully after you remove the roof as they tend to leak and puttin' a new seal on would be a waste of time,,,been there, done that

I believe there torx bolt head bolts as well, I was in for a surprise helping my buddy on his 89, I had to go back home and get my torx sockets...

Roof stripping

Does anyone have any pics of the weather stripping for the roof. The placement? I went through the new weatherstripping stuff, no instructions, or pics.

There is two seals one on the cab and one one the hard top.The pic I have shown is the fiberglass top seal after it was removed.

Goes flat were you see the yellow stuff that used to be weatherstrip adhesive. I can get you some pics after work tomorrow.I have a thread in the body shop of my top getting redone. >> link after post 18.

I use 3m weatherstrip adhesive it comes in two colors that I know of black and yellow.Last time i bought it was around 7 dollars a tube at most auto parts house.

Pretty damn heavy, like 200 pounds. It'll take 3 strong men.

I think it's closer to 300 lbs, it takes 2 strong people to lift it off. Especially if you don't want to scratch anything. It's too heavy for my wife to help, that's why I bought a softtopper, it sucked asking my buddies to help, and we enjoy going topless. Remember, there are 2 hidden bolts in the rear behind the interior panels near the tailgate, and there's a locating pin to help you get the top back in the correct position. On my '91 they weren't just Torx bits, they were Torx safety bits... I had to buy a whole new set to be able to remove my top. They have a pin in the center of the bolt that will prevent you from getting a standard Torx bit in the bolt. Also, remember that there are seals on the bottom of the top that sel against the be rails and the top, be careful not to damage them.

I weighed a K5 topper with slider windows and it came in at 188 lbs. On a stock height K5 I could remove and re-install the hardtop by myself, although it was a grunt to do it. Two people is much easier...

i can also say i weighed it,it came out to 188lbs,just a really awkward 188lbs...and i swore it was about 300lbs before i weighed it:doah:

....

Wow, two completely different weights were given out! I put off doing this project because it was said it weighed 200-300 lbs. Now its weighing 188. Crap! I wish I read this earlier...

That's what I was always told... Do the models with the seatbelts in the roof of the topper weigh more? All I knew was it takes two people to lift it off and that everyone has Said it weighed 300 lbs, so I believed them... I know one thing, my rear sits higher with it off.:dunno:

I doubt the seat belt things in the roof add more than 5 lbs or so.

I would go with the 188 lbs. as well. I have always done mine by myself. I always have had a bank that I backed up to with the tail gate down, then I just shoulder press it in a squat position and lift and walk it off. Then I just tilt until one end touches the ground and let the rest down. Then I usually go sit on the toilet for a spell.

yup, I'd guess and awkward 190ish... it's doable with one guy, in the right situation... walk it off on your back...

i didn't do a hoist/lift thingy, but what i did made it easily removable by myself... i just made 4 posts out of 4" x 4" that sat about 6" above the bedrail.. x'd out at the bottom so they stand up nice....

then 2 8' 2 x 4's.... get in the bed all the way in the front, lift it up a foot or so, slide a 2 x 4 in from post to post.. then do the back... drive out.... worked good...
