At first I was looking for a 87-91 TBI K5. But lately I've noticed the prices of the 1st Gen blazers are not bad. Not having looked at them in detail for 10 years I decided to see if I can find one. I have no welding skills. So a rusty one I am trying to avoid. Being out west I am fortunate. I found one with solid rockers and only the rust hole behind the doors. Mostly complete. Missing gas tank and bumpers. It is a 72. I've got another to look at later in the week.

That is duct tape covering the hole. There is an extra hole forward of the left rear wheel well that was for another gas cap. A previous owner added another tank. The previous owner also had custom brackets and rear bumper for a 40 gallon tank out back that is now gone.

can't go wrong with duct tape! lol

make sure you check the windshield frame over real well, and check the rocker boxes too.

I would stick with the EFI models, although if you wanted to do some work on a Gen 1, a fuel injected 350 transplant would be sweeeet

Thanks guys. This one is a maybe. A TBI 350/700r4 swap is something I'm considering. Plenty of donor vehicles in the area. We'll see what the other one looks like later this week.

Did you ready the Buyers Guide?

The photos you posted ... that's a basket case IMO.

TBi is the only way to go unless you like struggling with getting a truck to run like another member who recently went that route and apparently didn't heed the buyers guide. It started and ran when he bought it, but now he can't get it to start. I bet the seller tricked him by having it warmed up when he got there.

lol.....Do you really think that the "Buyers Guide" has anything to do with buying a 1st gen...??? :haha:

C'mon, really man... :doah:

I think TBI is great, but a well tuned Quadrajet can run pretty good. When I bought my Blazer I bought a 1970 so I didn't have to deal with the emissions stuff. I might eventually switch to a fuel injected motor, but people drove carbureted cars up until the 80's and seemed to get around ok.

I looked at a 71 yesterday. Wasp nest infestation kept me from looking at it for more than 20 minutes. It was a pass. The rockers were replaced and one was crooked enough to make the door hard to shut.

So back to the green 72 above. I made an offer(low for me) and will wait. If someone else gets it oh well.

I'm daydreaming of ideas such as a tbi swap. As I wait. Just feeding the fantasy of owning a 1st gen k5.

if you are going to dream..... dream big...... imagine the LS SWAP!

it can be done

and if you are buying a truck WITH THE INTENTION of doing a serious engine swap, then the only thing that matters is how little rust it has..

which is why i bought my blazer in tx

The LS swap would be great I agree.

I'm talking about this ... and yeah, it is very relevant.

Thanks for the buyers guide tip. Sometimes I get the glossed over look in my eye when looking at an older Chevy and tend to forget to check out show stoppers that are on the list. I let him know my offer and will have to wait and see. As much as I'd like a 72 K5, I don't want to get one I don't have the time or money to put into it. When I gave my offer over the phone at first I thought he had hung up, the length of silence was that long. He didn't hang up. He just sighed and said he'd let me know at the end of the week if it doesn't sell for what he wants. Elk season is a month away and my time and money is soon to be consumed by this years hunting adventure.

Brett,

Maybe I'm misreading your comments, but the truck at the top of this thread clearly needs both TIME and MONEY and plenty of both.... is this really the best option you've got?

It sounds like you are settling on this one because its close and convenient to you, but otherwise it doesn't seem to offer you what you really claim to need (an almost-ready-to-run 1st Gen)

Am I missing something here? :dunno:

I would add that any old Chevy truck requires either a lot of money and some time, or a lot of time and some money any way you want to break it down. And however much you think its going to be of both, its going to end up being more. I know I ended up in a lot deeper than I was originally thinking I'd be, and I'm not even close to being done!

No Greg you aren't missing a thing. I looked over a 89 4x4 Suburban last night with the idea in mind that I would just rob the drivetrain for the k5. Which of course is a lot of work. I can't afford upfront a $5000 running/driving K5. First gen or otherwise. So currently I'm contemplating taking a few years to put one together. Between the two vehicles I would be into it for less than $2000. Then adding in all the odds and ends and countless hours of labor I would eventually exceed $5000.

Chances are the owner isn't going to accept my offer. It was 60% of his asking price. Which incidentally is the cost of a mig welder of which I should be purchasing to finish another project.

(""Which incidentally is the cost of a mig welder of which I should be purchasing to finish another project."")

With just that sentence I will treat you like my son and say "Are you crazy" Your gona need that welder for lots of stuff in the future so get it and finish the project you have going THEN get a 1st gen because you are going to need one for it anyway. Also You will be hard pressed to drive a safe 1st gen for 5 Grand especially that greeinsh one in the 1st pictures.
