Curious before I jump into something I have never done. How do you correctly and safely remove a tailgate from a 87 K5?

Torqs bolts in frame horns for lift assist springs
Support cables
Disconnect wires at bottom for window
unbolt hinges from bed and be ready for a lot of weight!!!
I did it by myself but I left the assist spring on to kinda help hold it after the hinges were unbolts. It was super awkward, probably easier ways. I after grabbing a saw horse to help catch the weight, I cut the springs with my torch as fast as possible.
