actually it's funny I did the exhaust and she was mad. thought it was too load, but within 2 days she was reving thing! now she looks at the lift, shakes her head as if how in the h*ll am I going to get in that thing (she's 5'3", and I haven't got a step yet). it's not even drivable yet but I can tell she's starting to like it a more and more all the time... LOL I still think when everythings said and done she's gonna steal it from me. thats OK I'll sell her GTP and buy a K30 for me to tinker with... LOL

LOL! "Hooked" isnt quite the word I would use!!!
tongue.gif
Shes more like "thats your thing you want to do, and I have my thing to do".
wink.gif
But every now and then when she does drive it, she tends to get "carried away" with the truck! She even goes around town revving the truck up, etc. Just to show off!! Her sister always comes over to ask if she can take the truck out for the night or weekend sometimes!!! Sure, I let her take it!!! Its only a piece of metal, plastic, glass, liquid, etc. I tell her I have no problem with her taking it as long as she pays for her own gas!!! You would be saying the same thing if your truck got 5 mpg!!!!!

Yep, you read that correctly!!!

I went to Hutchinson today to meet up with Alex (Blzr4x4ngkid) to drop off some 3/4 ton axles for him and drove this 85 K30 down and back. The overall trip was about 100 miles and I have about 1/8th of a tank left!!! And thats a 20 gallon tank!!! So, go figure!!! A 454 will do that to you!!!

They get creative getting in lifted trucks. My wife's 5'2", and has developed this 45 minute olympic warmup looking routine to get in the Blazer. I've got a set of steps that I keep threatening to install - and still haven't.

I'm so poor I can't even pay attention
wink.gif

hey your gonna have to get me a vidoe of that warm up so my wife can use it... LOL
laugh.gif

I'm pretty tall, 6'5" and when I kinda hopped up into it I think she about freaked!
shocked.gif
I had no problem getting into it, but I don't think it is going to be easy for her.

HeavyMetal is fabricating some rock sliders / steps for me. it will be a 7" step. you can pull it out from where it mounts to the frame and turn it around to convert it to rock sliders.

I told her I would pack around some steps or a milk crate until I get them from him and get them installed... she's never gonna get in without it. LOL

Same thing here - I'm 6'4 and just hop in. I've got a set of Carr SuperHoop steps that I'm trying to figure out how to mount with quick release pins. Those rock-sliders sound cool - I might end up looking into that

Jeff, like anything there is a technique that must be learned...my wife is 5'4" and she would regularly hop in and out of my truck even when she was 8 1/2 months pregnant!

Hi Guys, Well again I have to say that I am NOT a Willys fan (owned to many of them.) That 6 cly that the military overhead cam engine was a hemi (owned a couple.) We have to remember that we are talking at least 10 years difference in tech here too. I think that the Kiaser would out pull the K30. Oh buy the way, I got a '86 K30 turbo diesel, automatic. Just my .02 Forgot to say, that you could hook both of these together, and they wouldn't come close to pulling my forklift on dry pavement! GOPHERKILLER

Actually I was talking about the tow rating which is 3590 lbs. for the Kaiser and 10,000 lbs. for the K30. Tow rating includes stopping and maintaining temperature while towing. For just tugging the Kaiser weighs 5500-6000 lbs which is about the same as a K30 so they should be evenly matched.

A guy I work with has a M-715 and belongs to a nation-wide club of 715 owners. These things definitely draw the looks when driving down the road.

I believe the transfer cases were the NP200 models. A two-speed gear drive divorce mount with a similiar low range to the 205. However, they are not direct drive when in 2wd so they have more drag and have heat build-up problems when driven for extended periods on the road.

The trans is a 4-speed manual (not sure of model) with a granny low first.

Granted, "old" style 60 front and 70 rear are not as strong as a modern 60 or 14FF, but they seem to hold up relatively well.

The 230 I-6 is a dog, period.

You can run 13/38-16 Swampers on the stock suspension with no rubbing.

Convertible top and fold down windshield.

There are a couple guys in this club with built rigs, including one with a 'vette TPI 350, built 700r4, bobbed bed, and 39" Boggers...pretty cool.

man, we need some video shots of this stuff

we could sell video's of the women in our lives techinique for getting in and out of our lifted critters!

I think the Kaiser was a front D70, closed knuckle, not as strong over-all as the open knuckle Chevy D60. Still, you're talking big parts, so there's going to be some good old-fashioned inherent strength there. And with a weaker engine, the Kaiser stuff should still hold up.

I think the jury is still out on what's better - '60's steel or '90's steel. I've met lots of people who swear that the R&P's built in the '60's were from better material than the stuff today. And given the choice, they'll pick "new old stock" over freshly cast & machined stuff right away.

You can fit huge meats on the Kaiser too, without any mod's. The Chevy needs a lift and trimming.

The K30's IMHO were under-rated for payload, I'd expect them to be equal in that respect.

Kaisers are cheaper. Heard a rumor of 3 of them local here for sale for in the range of $2k-2.5kUS. Can't find a K30 for anywhere near that price, unless it's totally beaten. And even then...

Kaisers are easy to modify. Dead simple wiring, etc. Removing the EFI from the Blazer and that's no fun... But the Kaiser wiring is gonna be so old you're gonna have to replace it entirely, anyway.

Was the Kaiser 24v? Not sure. 24V is superior to a 12v system.

The Kaiser is cool in every respect, but to me, the K30 is still a better truck (in every respect). I could drive the K30 every day, certainly not the Kaiser.

(CB, if you notice, there isn't too much left of my Jeep that's still Jeep...and the same can be said about my Blazer...)

Hey Rob, now something we BOTH agree on!!!
wink.gif
You have made excellent points here! No, I'm not dogging you here, just agreeing with you. Yeah, I still think the Kaisers are cool to see, own and drive, but may still be a "little" impractical. Oh well, maybe someday down the road, the K30's will fall into that category too. Sure hope not!

Gears: 5.87(impressive, but pencil sized pinion gear)/4.56

A few months back Petersens posted axle tech on most axles. The 14FF had the same pinion diameter as the 10 bolt rear!

Rye guy - I have seen many kaisers with the Cloased Knuckle D60... Haven't seen a D70 fronted Kaiser.. Maybe it was an option.

Both have a cool factor. The kaisers is a lot better because you dont see them everyday(well, some dont).. The K30's cool factor is only known by Chevy and 4x4 fans do to it's stout drivetrain....

I am a Chevy fan, but it sure would be sweet to own a Kaiser!

We seem to be forgetting here that M715 production ceased before K30 production began, also before NP205s and open knuckle 60s were around, and about 20 years before the K30 got FI.

I think everybody should be trying to compare the Kaiser to the Power Wagon more than the K30. Both of those old trucks fall under better categories than the "newer" K30. Just my opinion.

Honestly Rob I think you have a great truck! And if you're the same Rob from Canada that I'm thinking of I checked out your website long before I came to this site. You have a very detailed site and I'd love to go wheeling with you some time.

The Chevy would definitely need lift for bigger tires but we were comparing stock vehicles. The Kaiser is cool but I'd have to pick the K30 for myself. I have 5.38 gears and 38" tires, I can't imagine driving around with 5.87's and 36" tires. I don't think you could maintain the Kaisers top speed of 60 mph for very long with the low revving six. Every article I've ever read about the closed knuckle axles say the axles themselves will grenade under heavy impacts. Every Kaiser I've seen has a closed knuckle dana 60.
