Post up what you got. I had a 15' coleman ram-x canoe, rarely used it, too big for a solo. So I just picked up a Perception Outlaw 11.5 to fish on. The seat sit higher and had good back support, so it's much more comfortable than the canoe.

I want what you had, a 15 or 16' Coleman canoe.

Want in on this thread. I've looked at some pedal kayaks a few times, need to leave the desert though...

We had a 17' Grumman canoe when I was growing up. Was my dad's uncles, new in like 69-70. Dad bought it from him, And i was supposed to get it from dad. But he sold it with out a notice when his mind slipped away. :frown

I'm in the hunt to find who he sold it to and try to get it back. I'll double what they paid if I have to.
For now, the wife and me are looking for a light 14'-15' to start taking Kaz out on small trips.

When Kaz was born we had a 15' smoker craft that a buddy of mine had given me not long before he passed in a Motorcycle wreck.
When his only nephew got to be 18 and had his chit together I gave it to him.

Time for another one.

I’ve only used open top/ride on style kayaks. Always rented or borrowed them in the past. I’ve been thinking about buying one to explore the lakes around here and maybe fish from it. Any advice for a beginner? What to look for or avoid?

I'm a fan of the lifetime kayaks, I have 6 kids so for about a grand I got a tandem 10'6", that can hold me and a teenager and 2 small kids, a sit on 8'6" for one person, a sit in 10 footer and 2-5 foot smaller ones, I have a balance problem, and its hard for me to ride a kayak, the new tandem, the one with the 3 seats, is perfect because If I ride in the back its very stable, and I can focus on the person in front of me and not get nauseated and fall off, the red one is flat bottom its pretty stable and is and ok ride just has holes that let water get you wet, same as the green one, the blue one has a curved bottom, its a lot faster and cuts thru the water, the little ones are for 130# and less, perfect for a cooler or to tow a small kid to get them ready to paddle and be comfortable on there own boat...

I just went through the process as a noob, too, and ended up w/ the Perception Outlaw 11.5. I didn't want one of the cheap 2 piece models they sell at the box stores, they don't hold up. Rotomolded is the way to go. And I definitely wanted to stay under $1k. The mid level kayaks in the $600-800 range are very popular and the manufacturers are really packing on the features.

I rented a sit on top w/ the molded in seat a few weeks ago. I found I was comfortable in the seat but had a lot of difficulty getting on/ off the thing due to the arthritis in my back, hips and knees. I knew I had to get one w/ a raised seat. I also knew that I eventually wanted to be able to bring the new dog out on the kayak so I wanted one w/ a more open deck. I wanted to stay in the 11'-12' range for tracking, stability and weight capacity.

The 4 I looked at were the Perception Outlaw 11.5

Old town sportsman 120

Feel Free Moken 12.5

and Crescent Lite Tackle 12

I liked the open layout of the Crescent best but the seat was too low to the deck and it just didn't feel as solid. I liked the Feel Free hull the best, especially the built-in wheel to drag it around, but it had the pod between the feet taking up deck space. The Old town was at the top of the list (best seat and really solid build) but it would have come in over $1k and there was a wait. The Perception had the most open deck next to the Creacent and it was $200 cheaper. It's tri-hull design is not as fast on the water as some of the others but it's very stable. I've been out for 3+ hours a couple times now and the seat is very comfortable.

Headwater Kayaks has some really good reviews on youtube.

Not the best picture, but here's my setup. 2 fishing kayaks in the bed of the truck and the blazer on the trailer. No issues turning or anything. truck.jpg

Here is a fun one. My youngest just started college this year and they have to take some form of PE. My oldest did as well, something about trying to stave off that freshman 15. Anyway, the youngest is taking a kayak class. She was a Girl Scout through middle school and has done a lot of canoeing and kayaking (honestly, more with G.S. Than with me). In H.S. she even went back to teach the younger girls at camp. Talk about an easy, and fun, “A”.

why did my schools never have anything like that?!

Is it wrong to expect a $1000 + kayak to be made in the USA or Canada? I completely understand that stuff in the $300-500 range will be imported. But the high dollar ones? Thankfully, there are several domestic options, just need to watch those tags.

I’ve been saving my pennies and I’m going to look seriously at a few different ones over the next few weeks. I’ve been casually browsing for a while. My short list is pretty close to what @runamok151 posted earlier.
