Keep NP241 or....

Yeah, the 4l80's are big bucks, I have checked in to using one of these and you would have to find one out of a junk yard to keep the cost down and then you would have to bypass the electronics, now there is a place that sells that part of it for around 150 bucks I think, but don't quote me on that. I will try to do a little more digging on this to see if the cost is worth the overdrive or not.

Hey Steve I got a 4l80E out of a 96 3/4 ton 2wd truck w/7000 miles on it and the wiring harness w/TBI. The truck was totalled. Thinking of selling it. Any offers/trades??

Hey ya'll,
These super tranny's ya'll are talking about would be great but for now I will have a very limited amount of money to use. The local junkyard said they can get me the 27 spline TH350 out of a 4x4 for $350. I talked to another junkyard who said they had TH350's for $125 each, but I want to check on the spline count for them. What I am thinking... for now at least... is the TH350 27 spline, stick with the NP241 and extend my driveshaft. This way I won't be spending too much money but I will still have a pretty good combo as far as strength is concerned. What I was referring to for the linkage thingy is between the column and the tranny where the 2 bolt together. Will everything bolt together there? Anyone know how much it costs to get a driveshaft extended? I'd like to try and do everything for under $500, ya'll think that is reasonable or just wishful thinking?

I could be wrong but I don't think the 4L80E has the same low first as the 4L60 (700R4). It would be beefier and have an overdrive but the first gear ratio is about the same as a TH350 (I think).

Your right the 4l80 does not have the lower first gear that the 700r4 has, but with overdrive you can go lower with the diff gears.
I just got off the phone with Jet and talked to them a little about there 400 and 4l80 tranny's. The 4l80 is 1-5/8" longer than the th400 which is already long to begin with and they weigh about 200#. The good news is that the rear 32 spline output/tail shaft is the same as the th400.
BY the way Jet's new th400 is around $1300. After that I didn't even want to ask them what the 4l80e cost.
Here is Jets direct line to the tranny guys 1-714-848-4200

Moneypit, I think the 2wdrive trannys have a different tail shaft than the 4x4's, but not sure.

Mudfrog, $500 sounds like the right ball park if your keeping your 241. On the other hand, I have heard that you will need to get a different output shaft for the Th350 to work with your 241. Anybody else have any on this?

Don't you buy no ugly truck!

TH350s were used in one year only (1981) with 208 transfer cases, which use the same spline count (27) as 241 cases, when the 241 was behind a 700r4 (if it was behind a 400 trans, the spline count is 32). Pre-'81 350s used with 203s also had 27 spline outputs. Just make sure you have a 4x4 version of the 350. I've seen 350/203 combos for as low as $150.

$500. seems high for the adapter. I swapped out the 700r4 for a rebuilt 350 in my 84 (np208)several years ago for $600., including the adapter and installation. Doesn't the adapter just consist of a longer output shaft and a spacer?

PS: I am still running the same trans in my '88 now. 130,000 miles and another rebuild later.

Ive had two 700s... one in a blazer I sold @ 154,000--Tranny worked great, never rebuilt. Also, another blazer of mine had 178,000 on the never-rebuilt shifting smoothly 700 when I sold that one. I have certainly had good experiences with them.

if you are ripping it all out, go with a Th400.

I stayed with a TH350 becuase that what was in mine and i didn't have the time, space or cash to redo everything.

If you have come to the conclusion that ripping it apart is the thing for you to do, there is no reason not to go with the Th400. It might cost a bit more now, but in reliability, it will be unbeatable. If i was a rich man and in your shoes, i would run the Th400 with the NP241. that would allow a decent crawl.
