I am thinking of making an oil bottle holder that will bolt in the bed of my pickup. I have seen them on desert racers, but don't know how good or bad it is to keep the oil bottles outside in the elements. I want to keep like 5 qts. engine oil, 7 qts. tranny fluid, and a bottle or two of gear oil.

as long as the seals are intact, i wouldnt see a problem with it. depending on how long they would be there, the plastic may not stand up to long term UV exposure. might start to break down. but i would imagine it would take a long time for that to happen. once you open them however, all bets are off. water will penetrate the threads of the cap im pretty sure.

You could always rotate the bottles. Meaning, when its time to change your oil use the stuff thats on the rack and put new bottles in its place. That way you dont have to worry about it.

Is this on a trail only truck? or dd?

Good call.

I'ld still bend a piece of thin sheetmetal to make a cap to cover teh tops of the bottles though.

Is there a good reason you aren't just installing a locking toolbox of sorts though? That way you coudl keep other crap in there to, and protect your fluids.

I have an ammo box bolted and locked in the bed, with the 37" fullsize spare, 5 gallon gas can, and portable Warn 9.5ti in the bed, I don't have room for a tool box...and am even wondering about room for my oil holder idea. I like the idea of a lid though, so that may be a possibility, and I was planning on rotating the oil during changes. This is on a trail rig/daily driver/toy, so hard to tell...

I would avoid the clear oil bottles such as Quakerstate. Probably not an issue, but I don't know if UV can break down the oil in a clear bottle.

I would also reduce the total amount of bottles to like 6

2 or 3 quarts of ATF, 2 Qts, of engine oil and 1 of gear oil.

Remember if you are diving into this stash in the field it is to get something that broke on the road agian. Anything slick makes bearings happy enough to get out.

Good call Miniwally, I will make it 6 bottles total; that will also make it easier to fit in the bed.
